Les: It's fairly anticlimactic. The crew gets me back to civilization, and I shower, pack and fly home. Some years ago I enjoyed the ECO challenge type expedition racing. As time passed it seemed it became more a battan death march than a challenge. What are your feelings about this kind of event? Oh, by the way, sounds like you play a mean mouth harp.

Our Airedales come from owners who can no longer care for their Airedale, usually because of health or financial reasons or because of a lack of time for a dog, or from shelters where the Airedale has either been turned in by its owner or was a stray. All Airedales entering our program are evaluated medically and for temperament to the best of our ability.

Some are and some are not. We do not discriminate on the basis of hearing. Our bottom line criteria for taking a dog into the rescue is aggression. We do not take people aggressive dogs or dogs that have bitten. Aggression has nothing to do with deafness.

Not always. In most cases, the damage to the data is permanent. However, it rarely happens that no data can be retrieved from the affected media. In fact, the amount of data that can be rescued from the affected media depends on the amount of permanent damage to the media.

Most come to the HELP League from shelters. Some have been surrendered to the shelters by their owners and others have been picked up as strays. As a rule, we only accept dogs directly from their owners under exceptional circumstances (for example, the owner's serious illness prevents them from caring for their pet).

We have responded to several whales at the spot where they stranded who weighed many tons. The most famous of these was Humphrey. The largest animal we have brought into The Center was a subadult Steller sea lion named Simba picked up from Anchor Bay Campground, Mendocino County on July 16, 1992. Simba weighed 1041 pounds. Unfortunately, Simba was very sick and died shortly after rescue. Occasionally, we have rescued an adult northern elephant seal weighing over 700 pounds.

The smallest animal we have rescued was a six-pound northern fur seal named Doug from Humboldt county on March 26, 1993. Unfortunately, Doug was extremely emaciated when he was rescued and did not survive. Generally, every year several fur seal pups, often weighing as little as 10-15 pounds, strand throughout The Center's rescue range. An increase in strandings of fur seal pups in the fall has become an indicator of an upcoming El Niño event.

If an unfortunate incident occurs such as flight delays, illness and bad weather on any part of the trekking route and rescue evacuation is required, our well trained and experienced guides will provide every assistance to you. We coordinate our service with a recognised private helicopter company and the Royal Nepalese army in the case of emergency rescue.

A rescued Havanese is one which is relinquished by its owner for a variety of reasons, ended up in a shelter as a stray, often family members may not have the time to spend with the dog, or the death or illness of its owner may occur which results in the Hav no longer having a home, or a puppy mill. Often a Havanese is sold through a pet store that is only interested in a sale. Without regard for the cost and responsibilities of maintaining this breed, the new family buys the dog on a whim.

No, we do not usually release animals at the location from which they were rescued. Often the rescue sites are public beaches, which are not good release points. Other animals are rescued from places that are very inappropriate for them such as docks, sidewalks, roads, porches, carports, and even airport runways. Marine mammals are migratory animals and are capable of swimming large distances, so it does not affect them to be released at a different point within their range.

Through effective assessment, triage, and monitoring processes, The Center only admits animals that are sick or injured and in need of medical assistance. Survival varies by species, but overall approximately half of the animals admitted are released back into the wild.

The smallest animal we have rescued was a female sea otter pup that weighed less than 3 pounds and was only a few days old. The pup was illegally picked up by well-meaning members of the public on March 23, 2005. Currently the pup is being cared for at the Monterey Bay Aquarium The smallest pinniped we have rescued was less than 6 pound northern fur seal pup six-pound northern fur seal named Gozzi from San Luis Obispo County in 1997.

Just like people, no dog is perfect. Many of the dogs who arrive at the HELP League have not received much training or attention during their lives. However, the vast majority are friendly, outgoing Mals who respond beautifully to loving, affectionate attention and firm, consistent training. During their time with us, we try to teach them a few basic rules of good behaviour.

We are always thrilled to hear from people who want to adopt one of our Malamutes. There are several steps to take if you are interested. First, try to acquaint yourself with the breed. Our brochure, So You Think You Want A Malamute?, is a good place to start. If you can, meet some malamutes and talk with their owners and/or breeders. Next, if you decide to proceed, obtain approval to adopt a Malamute from the AMHL by completing the online Application Form to Adopt a Malamute from the AMHL.

Potential adopters are requested to complete an Adoption Application. After a family/individual has submitted an Application to Great Pyrenees Rescue and a preliminary screening process has occurred, arrangements will be made for a Rescue volunteer to visit the potential adoptive home to ensure that the dog is going to a permanent, loving home where all members of the family want a dog of this particular breed, and are willing to provide a suitable environment.

If there is one thing all pets deserve, it's a loving home and family to call their own. But it doesn't always work that way. Just ONE of every FIVE animals born will find a home. Millions of dogs of all ages and breeds, throughout this country don't have a permanent home - and they're looking for help. One way you can help is by adopting a deserving rescue dog. Often, previous owners have given up rescue dogs just after they have passed through their most difficult developmental period.

Most of our Aussies come from pounds and shelters in northern California. Some come from owners who are no longer available to care properly for their dog. Since foster space is very limited, only the Aussies with the greatest need (such as shelter dogs in danger of being put to sleep) are fostered.

Absolutely. Rescued dogs make great companions. They are just as trainable as a pure breed dog. Even if they have been abused mentally or physically in their previous life, we can bring out their true personality with the training program.

Our rescue dachshunds come from several different sources. Some are from area animal shelters who sign them over to our group and some are stray Dachshunds found by individuals who were not able to locate the owner. Occasionally, we accept owner relinquishments from individuals who have no options for their dog but to surrender to a rescue group.

Our application consists of a several page form that is mailed to your home address. (Our application is not available on-line nor do we send it by e-mail). You must fill out this application completely, have all adults in the home sign it, and return it to us via regular postal mail. A committee member may contact you for a home visit. After this has been completed, the adoption committee will meet, and you can expect to receive a prompt response either by phone or postal mail.

Rescued animals from New Orleans were first taken to a triage center outside the city to be assessed by a veterinarian. Then, animals were transported to the temporary emergency shelter at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales, Louisiana. There, the animals were bathed, fed, and watered.

Rescued animals in Mississippi were taken to the Forrest County Multi-Purpose Center in Hattiesburg, where they were checked by a veterinarian, bathed, fed, and watered. The successful shelter operations have closed, and all rescued animals were either reunited with their owners or have been transported for safe-keeping to animal shelters in other states. The animal shelters taking in pets displaced by Hurricane Katrina will be holding those animals to give owners a chance to claim them.
