In recognition of their service, American Veterans are entitled to educational assistance through the Department of Veteran's Affairs (VA) Montgomery GI Bill. You will need to contact the VA for further information and assistance. Congress authorized the benefits because of evidence linking the illness to a parent’s exposure to the herbicide Agent Orange. VA recently created a toll-free number where people can receive information about the spina bifida program. The number is 1-888-820-1756. Children of Vietnam veterans born with spina bifida are eligible a monthly disability allowance and for vocational training.

If you paid into the educational program you have 10 years from discharge to use your GI Bill benefits. Your children may also be eligible to go to college in California if you have any verifiable disabilities from the service which may be as small as a scar from surgery, wounds, from combat, etc.

Southwest University participates in the education programs sponsored by the Department of Veterans Affairs. The University has trained personnel who will assist prospective students in enrollment and processing with the VA. Prospective students who are eligible for GI Bill or VEAP benefits and are seeking tuition assistance under one of these programs need to first contact the local VA office or education officer to receive an eligibility certificate.

Currently, there are three different educational benefits available to members of the UTARNG. First is the Montgomery GI BILL. This pay the Soldier $282.00 tax free dollars per month while the Soldier is in school full-time. The total amount on this benefit is $10,152.00. This is in addition to any other financial aid the Soldier is receiving. The second benefit is the Tuition Waiver. This is a 100% tuition waiver. A percentage of all state scholarships go to this program.

The newest generation of combat veterans receives the same benefits traditionally associated with military service. That includes disability compensation for those with service-connected health problems, VA pensions for veterans with limited incomes, VA home loan guarantees and educational assistance for those who contributed to the Montgomery GI Bill while in the military. YES! The Ventura County Electrical Joint Apprenticeship and Training Program is approved for Veterans Administration benefits. Upon acceptance to the apprenticeship program, we will assist you with the required forms for VA.

If a veteran was in the military and did active duty time, he/she may qualify for a grant through the Pennsylvania Higher Education Association (PHEA) which is handled through the Financial Aid Office at the College. Yes, recently discharged veterans who served in combat locations or who received hostile or imminent danger pay after November 11, 1998 can receive health care for conditions potentially related to their service for two years after their release from service. Combat veterans may be enrolled as priority group 6 and are eligible for the full medical benefits package and are not subject to copays for care potentially related to their combat service.

Veterans Services provides assistance to veterans and their dependents in filing and developing claims and appeals pertaining to the full spectrum of veterans' entitlements.
