There is an unsupported way to play audio CDs using the Windows Performance Pack version of JMF 2.1.1! Assuming your CD-ROM drive is mapped to E:, you can use the URL "file:/E:/Track01.cda", etc., to play the CD track.

On Windows, most video capture devices that have a VFW driver are supported. JMF 2.1.1 will run on Windows 95/98/NT 4.0/2000, Solaris/SPARC, and any Java Compatible platforms. The pure Java version of JMF 2.1.1 will now run on Apple's MRJ 2.1.4; however there are a/v syncronization problems since Apple added a 6 second audio buffer to that MRJ.

Problem 1: Dirt, fingerprints or scratches on the playback side of the DVD/CD is causing problems. DVD's are more susceptible to this problem than CD's. Solution: If a CD or DVD isn't playing back right, first look at the shiny surface. Are there fingerprints, scratches (for DVD's, it can only take one decent scratch to stop it from working) or dirt on the surface? This is often the case if some parts of the DVD/CD work, and some parts don't. If so, then first try cleaning it.

No. A DVD is a different kind of disc, based on a high density format. It requires a new physical laser unit to read the discs. A CD-i player can only read discs based on the normal infra-red laser technique: compact discs or CDs. It is unlikely that a combination playback device for CD-i and DVD will ever become available, nor will it be possible to upgrade a CD-i player to play DVD discs since this should require the replacement of the entire disc read-out mechanism.

For Video CD, your DVD player must be capable of playing VideoCD 2.0 discs. Check the specifications page in the instructions included with your DVD player to see if the VCD format is supported. Your DVD player must be compatible with the type of DVD or CD disc used to record your title. Many DVD players are not compatible with some brands of -R, -RW, +R or +RW discs. Your DVD player must support the speed at which you burned your media.

When the green light near the drive is off, open the disk tray and make sure that the disk is centred and the label is facing up. Try another disk of the same type, music or data, to see if the disk is faulty. Try a different brand of disk - some manufacturer's disks may not play well on your drive.

In order to play any of these formats, you must have a player that will play that format. Many computers now come with DVD drives in which case you could play DVD. If your player is not DVD compatible, it will not play DVD.

Yes. Writing to CD and DVD discs is supported as long as you have some packet writing software installed on your computer. It usually comes bundled as a part of larger CD / DVD recording software packages and makes your CD or DVD drive act as a standard, transparently write-enabled drive. Packet writing software uses UDF-formatted CD and DVD discs, and allows GRBackPro to write to your CD / DVD drive by treating it like a hard disk or a floppy diskette, using the regular drive letter.

Some "universal "players will also be able to play "Super Audio CD" (SACD) discs. However, some manufactures may produce DVD-Audio only players for the high-end audiophile. There is usually a Screen / Mode button to adjust the screen from 4:3 stretch to zoom.

All of our computers, Mac and PC, have DVD/CD burners. Our older Mac G5 towers (in room 001) are capable of burning DVD-R's with a rated burn speed of 8x or lower. They will also burn DVD+R's of any speed. All other Mac's and PC's will burn DVD-R's of any speed. We sell blank CD's and DVD's at the Help Desk.

A CD-R and CD-RW is basically a recordable CD. However, whether or not a DVD player capable of playing a regular CD can play a CD-R depends on the quality of the CD-R. Some CD-Rs recorded on higher quality CD burners can play perfectly. However, if you used a lower quality CD burner to make your CD-Rs and CD-RWs, then there's a chance they won't play. Also, a CD-RW (as opposed to a CD-R) have lower light reflection, so CD-RWs are even less likely to play.

All Smart Classrooms have the ability to play DVD's. All computers in centrally scheduled Smart Classrooms have a DVD/CD ROM drive capable of playing either CDs or DVDs. When you put a DVD into the computer, it will launch an on-screen DVD player which will provide the usual Play/Stop/Advance controls. Select the computer as the video source to the data projector, and the DVD movie will be projected to your class.
