WSDS offers an annual family weekend for children and teens who are deaf or hard of hearing as well as other family events. Check the WSDS calendar for upcoming events sponsored by WSDS and other agencies such as Washington State School for the Blind, Washington School for the Deaf, and Department of Services for the Blind.

The best way to meet Deaf people is to go where they meet. Go to social gatherings such as dinners at the local mall, Deaf Coffee, and some Deaf clubs. Contact Deaf leaders in your community to locate these gathering places.

To compare these two sensory disabilities is difficult. With both disabilities, the degree to which the restrictions can be overcome depends very much on the person concerned and his or her environment. Our instructors are very limited in their knowledge of sign language. Deafness is not usually a problem but most often the person has some residual vision and uses the two compatibly. We are unable to service the profoundly deaf/totally blind at this time.

Yes, we have contracts with the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind and we have worked closely with the Perkins School for respite care and placement following graduation and the Helen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youths and Adults in New York and Massachusetts.

Kids who are totally blind and can't tell the difference between light and dark are not afraid of the dark. Even those who can see light and darkness are usually not afraid of the dark. There is very safe and caring children's programming available during every worship service. Join the Deaf Pilots Association. DPA represents deaf pilots’ interests with the Federal Aviation Administration, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, the Experimental Aircraft Association, and the National Association of Flight Instructors. Each year, DPA sponsors a week-long fly-in, to which DPA members and their families come from all over to enjoy the fellowship of flight as well as to discuss mutual concerns. Geissler's does not have the facility to translate orders from other languages, nor do they have a TTY device. We suggest you contact your local human service agency to find out if a Friendly Visitor or in-home assistance program exists. A volunteer may be willing to place orders for you. Trustees can establish a credit account with Geissler's for those unable to handle their own finances.

Every user's experience is different, but many report that they are able to locate the direction sounds are coming from, and almost all can put a telephone to the dead ear and hear the dial tone. In quiet conditions, most can carry on a phone conversation using the aided ear, and whispers can usually be heard from the TransEar side.

If your child does ask a pointed question, we recommend that you not give a complete answer-at least for now. Here's a suggested response: "That's a good question and someday when you are an adult and more mature, I want to answer you more fully. But for now, that information is off limits." If your child is not satisfied and persists, you may want to admit that "I made some mistakes I really regret"-but not share further details.

This law makes it illegal to discriminate against persons with disabilities in housing, public accommodations and public conveyances. The law also spells out the protections for persons using or training assistive animals.

Klee Kai love kids and do great with them as long as the child has been taught to respect the dog and not tease it. These dogs are small enough that an out of control child could cause serious damage. Most Klee Kai would give a child enough leeway that the child could cause serious damage before the dog could run. Good owners make good dogs. They do seem to have this sixth sense about the intentions of a child and will usually avoid a child with bad intentions.

If the disease progresses, you may be declared "Legally blind". "Legally blind" are terrifying words but they do not give an accurate picture of the situation. The situation is not nearly as bleak as those words imply. You will be "partially sighted" rather than blind. Because you may not be able to do certain things, such as driving, laws have been passed to help with such handicaps. Legally blind is not the same as totally blind.

Blind people are more competent in the darkness and are the best people capable of doing the job in such context. You will become blind for at least one and half hour and you really must be able to trust your waiter. It is a true "transfer of trust" and an amazing approach to raise awareness about blind disability and disability in general.

Carpenter's Kids meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the school year, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Many of our staff members are Harding University students; therefore, we follow their schedule for holidays and Spring Break. Holidays and any days off will be pre-announced.

Our approach is relational. Leaders go wherever kids are to begin building significant relationships with them. Leaders go to school sporting events, concerts, plays, malls and fast-food restaurants. Leaders are genuinely interested in kids' lives, and they do what they can to show kids they care about them.

Blindness doesn't affect a person's hearing, so when talking with a blind/visually impaired person, use a normal speaking voice. Don't be alarmed if the person does not make eye contact. If you wish to walk with the person, ask them if they would like to talk. When talking to a blind person, it is acceptable to use everyday words such as "see or look". This will not offend a blind person. Just relax and be yourself. This will put the blind person at ease as well.

It has been said there are three different kinds of deaf ministries. 1) An interpreting ministry, 2) A Deaf teaching ministry, 3) A Deaf church ministry. Each has its own benefits. Some areas cannot support a Deaf church. Other areas tend to shun an interpreting only ministry. It is important to work toward a successful deaf ministry, no matter which type it is.
