It's only now, with the release of Quake 3, that there's an engine that's so perfectly suited to ports of Quake 1 modifications. A lot of this has to do with the physics, which id Software have balanced very well in Quake 3 to please both Quake 1 and Quake 2 fans.

Linux Gamers' FAQMost likely, your desktop enviroment is set up to run a sound server. In the case of Gnome, it's usually esound (killall -9 esd). In KDE, it is usually artsd (killall -9 artsd). Both of these can be disabled from inside the enviroment. In Gnome you can disable it inside the gnomecc program. In KDE you can open KDE Control Center -> Sound -> Sound Server -> uncheck Start aRts soundserver at KDE startup, and restart.

A-Team released the source code for people to use as they saw fit. As a consequence, there are 30+ variants of Action Quake. One of the most popular ones is called AQ:TNG (The Next Generation).
