VCD stands for Video CD in contrast to Audio CD which is normally logoed as Compact Disc on your music CD. SVCD is in half way between VCD and DVD which uses CD-ReWritable media to achieve near-DVD quality. In Asia and Europe, it is getting popular because of the low cost of CD media. DVDonCD is to use the same high quality content and store in regular CD media. Because of its limited capacity on CD, it might hold only 15 minutes of DVD content. Sometimes it is called cDVD or miniDVD.

For VCD/SVCD, you'll want to work with CD-R rather than CD-RW because you can't play CD-RW discs in normal VCD/SVCD players.

Sometimes this problem is caused by media incompatibility issues. If a DVD/CD does not play or work after you have burned the medium, choose another medium type or brand and repeat the burning process. Eventually, you may have to lower the burning speed. Many writers are not compatible with cheap or old media (blanks). The quality of some blanks is actually so bad, that the specified maximum speed cannot be reached in most cases. Find a combination of writer, disc and player that work together.

SVCD is a format orginated in China and is basically MPEG-2 video at 480 x 480 NTSC at bit rates up to 2.5Mb authored onto a regular CD or (or very cheap) CD-R. Some "universal "players will also be able to play "Super Audio CD" (SACD) discs. However, some manufactures may produce DVD-Audio only players for the high-end audiophile. If your SVCD is on a CD-R or CD-RW it could be because the player does not support the media type very well. Even though your player may support standard Video CDs on CD-R/RW, SVCDs have a higher bit rate and are more demanding. As mentioned earlier, we have found Pioneer players to be the most compatible.
