Why do you use RAID 1 instead of RAID 5?

Xssist™ Group Pte. Ltd. (Singapore) Frequently Asked Q...
RAID 1 has better performance compared to RAID 5, in particular, the write performance is much better. As web and email servers does a lot of writes, to log files, email spools etc, RAID 5 is not suitable for the server. In terms of redundancy, RAID 5 has 1 parity drive in an array (of possibly 7 drives). With a failure of 1 drive, the array performance is badly degraded. This may lead to much higher IO waits, and the server will be unresponsive.

What is RAID 5?

Kaleidescape - FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
RAID Level 5 is a type of RAID that uses block-level striping (spreading out the blocks of each file across multiple disk drives) and block-interleaved distributed parity to spread the redundant parity information used to achieve fault tolerance across all the disks in the array. If any disk fails, the distributed parity data are used to compute the contents of the "virtual" (failed) disk. An advantage of RAID 5 is that there is no single dedicated parity disk causing a write bottleneck.

What are the differences between RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5 and RAID 5 With Hot Spare?

Untitled Document
Uses Space Striping to combine multiple disk drives into one large volume. (One large virtual disk) There is no fault tolerance. No fault tolerance. If any of the disk drives fails, the whole volume will fail and all data will be lost. Provides data stripping (spreading out the blocks of each file across multiple disks) but no redundancy. This improves performance but does not deliver fault protection.

When would it be appropriate to use RAID 5?

FAQ - InfrantWiki
Where X-RAID excels at large sequential transfers, RAID 5 performs better in smaller random access request pattern, fitting better in most office environments. Full volume management is available when you select RAID 5 (or Flex-RAID) mode. You can delete the existing volume and recreate one or more volumes, with each volume with different snapshot space and quota specification.

How do I configure a RAID 1 or RAID 5 volume with a spare disk?

FAQ - InfrantWiki
After installation, delete the existing RAID volume and recreate it with one disk configured as a hot spare. Please be aware that X-RAID does not support hot spare.

What do I use instead of infinity for my Lab 1 implementation?

CS 241 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
In the Java implementation (in FastClosestPair.java) I've defined INF to be the maximum double possible which will work fine here since the maximum distance for the coordinate ranges you are given will always have a distance less than this quantity. For those using C++, I've already defined maxfloat as 400000.0 in the provided stdinc.h which is larger than the distance between any two points for the coordinate ranges that are used.

I Venture Circulation - Faq
Raid Level 1 means that one drive mirrors the other. In the event that one of your drives fails, the other will immediately continue to serve data. An additional feature with Raid is that, if one drive is overtaxed, the overflow requests will be handled by the second drive. RAID1 requires two drives, but you will lose the disk space of one of the drives. This means, for example, that two 36GB drives will only give you a total of 36GB of disk space.

RAID 1 requires two drives, but you will lose the disk space of one of the drives.

Why is Raid 1 important?

DrakNet-Welcome to Drak.Net Web Hosting
RAID 1 is a particular type of RAID technology which ensures that all data is duplicated on pairs of disks simultaneously. This ensures that in the event of a hard drive failure, the server can switch to the other disk with no interruption in service. Also, if multiple requests for the same data are made, demand can be distributed between two disk copies therefore decreasing response time for data access.

If I have a single big capacity hard drive then why to use RAID instead of Hard drives?

RAID Recovery Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ
RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks) systems are faster and more durable than single large hard disk drives. A RAID system stripes or mirrors your data across multiple hard disk drives. Therefore, when you access your data, all the disks are working at the same time, giving a major increase in speed. The RAID hardware controller also contains a large memory cache which dramatically increases performance.

What is the advantage of using X-RAID over RAID 5?

FAQ - InfrantWiki
The ReadyNAS systems support both RAID levels. RAID 5 is an industry-standard RAID level whereas X-RAID is an Infrant patented RAID technology that simplifies and automates the RAID management process. X-RAID utilizes a one-volume technology with built-in volume expansion support, either by adding more disks or by replacing existing disk with larger capacity disks. For instance, you can start out with one disk, and add up to 3 more disks when you need more capacity or when you can afford them.

Can RAID 1 be combined with another type of RAID, such as RAID 0?

RAID 1 Data Recovery FAQ | Vantage Data Recovery (800)487-56...
The combination of a mirrored configuration with striping added is referred to as RAID 1+0 (also called RAID 10). In this scenario, the configuration will provide mirroring (RAID 1) across two (2) or more drives and will "stripe" the data in real-time to a second mirrored drive set. This unique combination will provide data redundancy and some speed advantages, but it does so at the expense of usable storage space.

Why should I use SpeechStudio Suite instead of SAPI 5 directly?

SpeechStudio Inc. Frequently Asked Questions
SAPI 5 is a lot easier to use than SAPI 4.0, its predecessors and similar products, but it is still quite difficult. Here are some reasons to use SpeechStudio Suite: SpeechStudio Suite handles a lot of problems for you, including automatic grammar construction and engine repair, context switching, and coordination among multiple speech-enable applications. SpeechStudio grammars tie voice commands directly to their actions.

What's with the levels 1 through 5? Which level do I want to use?

Autoclave - Secure Disk Deletion
All levels erase the disk completely. The only difference is how difficult it would be for someone to recover data from the disk using sophisticated recovery tools (including scanning tunneling electron microscopes). Level 1 is the fastest, level 5 is the slowest. Level 5 is the most secure, level 1 is the least secure. I personally couldn't recover anything from a disk that had been cleaned with level 1, but someone with the know-how and a few thousand dollars could.

What is the definition of a "RAID 1" volume?

RAID 1 Data Recovery FAQ | Vantage Data Recovery (800)487-56...
RAID 1" refers to a "Redundant Array of Inexpensive (or Independent) Disks" that have been established in a Level 1, or mirrored, drive set. A RAID 1 volume is a set of disk drives that are configured for data to be written to 2 volumes simultaneously. This configuration provides complete data redundancy in the event of a drive failure.

What are the arguments against RAID 1 configurations?

RAID 1 Data Recovery FAQ | Vantage Data Recovery (800)487-56...
RAID 1 (mirroring) results in loss of half of the physical storage capacity of the drives comprising the volume. For example, if two (2) 500GB hard drives are configured as a RAID 1 volume, only 500GB is available for data storage. Using the same drives in a RAID 0 (striped) configuration, total data storage would equal 1000GB (or approximately 1 terabyte). Also, if damaged or corrupted data is written to one drive, it is also written to the second drive.
