Plastic bags are petroleum based and they fill landfills, harm nature and litter our communities. Since it can take more than 1,000 years for a plastic bag to break down in a landfill, polymers of every single plastic bag ever produced still exist on our planet. As they break down, plastic bags go through photodegradation—breaking down into small toxic particles that contaminate both soil and water, and end up entering the food chain when animals accidentally ingest them.

For several years, EPA has sponsored an internship program with the express desire to encourage students to pursue an environmental career. SPRWS has restored wetlands, which act as natural filters, around Vadnais Lake. Aeration systems have been installed in Vadnais and Pleasant lakes in an effort to increase oxygen levels and control the nutrients which fuel algae growth at the source. The utility is boosting its ability to pump well water that can be used to dilute the water coming primarily from the Mississippi River when taste and odor problems arise.

Studies on environmental contamination of hair have been limited. To date, cocaine has been the principal focus of these studies and cocaine seems to be the drug most attracted to hair. Cocaine, in its smokable form, can deposit on hair. As mentioned above, the crack smoker will not only ingest cocaine, but will add more cocaine to his/her hair by mere proximity to the smoke during use. Most individuals who do not use cocaine will also not be around smoked cocaine.
