Puffy, baggy lower eyelids are caused by weakening of the tissues around the eye. Eyelid surgery removes excess fat and tightens drooping tissues through tiny incisions that are hidden within the eyelid.

The eyes almost never close fully immediately after eyelid surgery. This is due to numerous reasons but almost always the eyes will close fully after a few weeks or months. During this time, it is very important to keep the eyes lubricated with artificial tear drops and tear ointments.

Many patients seeking refractive surgery do so because they have dry eyes and are unable to wear contact lenses anymore. It is important that your dry eyes be treated. This usually involves the use of tear supplements and punctum plugs (tiny silicone plugs placed in the tear drainage openings of your eyelid) that delay the drainage of your own tears so your eyes will stay moist.

In general, the impact on your ability to do most activities is limited. You can read, write and use your eyes as much as possible. You should not rub your eyes post-operatively - use artificial tears to relieve irritation. You should wear your protective eye shields at night for at least 1 week and longer if you feel there is any chance of traumatizing your eyes while asleep.

first, your eyelids will be held open with a spreader, and the eye drops will stop your blinking reflex. The surgeon will ask you to keep your eyes focused on a single spot during the procedure. Should your eye move even by a fraction of a millimetre, the eye tracker will compensate to insure a perfectly centred treatment. If the eye movement is too large, the laser will stop automatically. The eye is then re-centred and the procedure may continue.

The cause is genetic. Not all people who age get bags under their eyes. Everybody has fat around the eye and this fat is usually held back by connective tissue called the septum. In some people this septum becomes loose and the fat is allowed to push outwards creating both heavy upper eyelids and bags under the eyes.

Eye surgeons normally recommend that you avoid rubbing the eyes after LASIK surgery for the first three weeks. This is to prevent abnormal folds from developing in a corneal flap which may occur after vigorous rubbing.

Some people experience no bruising after rhinoplasty; others have very noticeable dark marks all around the eyes. These “black eyes” result from internal bleeding, which is sometimes unavoidable in an invasive procedure like a nose job. Since the bruises usually fade away by the tenth day and most patients spend a week or so recovering from the rhinoplasty surgery, they are not considered a major complication.

No. Baggy eyes are not necessarily a physical sign of myopia. Many myopes, however, have dark circles under their eyes because of the tension in their face. After I started to release the tension in my face, the skin under my eyes started to look and feel more healthy, and the dark circles disappeared.

This depends upon the unique situation of each patient and will be determined by careful measurements of the ocular misalignment prior to surgery. In the vast majority of cases, both eyes are operated upon at the same time.

Our goal is always to obtain an excellent ocular alignment. Individual patients, however, do vary in their response to surgery, resulting in an 80% to 90% success rate in achieving satisfactory alignment after one operation. However, with time, about 20% to 30% of patients may need re-operation if misalignment reappears.

Answer Patients are often concerned that changing pressure in an airplane can hurt the eyes after LASIK. This is not a problem. The truth is that the dryness of an airplane cabin is the greater concern. LASIK patients will need to moisturize their eyes frequently with artificial tears to prevent dryness and discomfort (perhaps every 15-30 minutes of air travel). We routinely have patients who fly the day after LASIK surgery. The eye is the most significant and precious part of our body.

Some patients find that their eyes seem to be shaped differently after blepharoplasty. However, this is to be expected to some extent. In other cases, the lower eyelid becomes weak and won’t support the weight of the eyelid. However, Mr. Vik Vijh will test for this before cosmetic surgery and if he sees it as a potential problem, he will let you know and tighten the lid during the operation.
