Children with ADHD can be intelligent and creative. Many overcome their disability and lead successful lives. The problems may ease with time, but ADHD can last into adulthood. Coming to terms with and understanding ADHD can often make it easier to deal with.

The number of children who are being treated for ADHD has risen. It is not clear whether more children have ADHD or more children are being diagnosed with ADHD. Also, more children with ADHD are being treated for a longer period. ADHD is now one of the most common and most studied conditions of childhood. Behavior modification techniques have been used to treat the behavioral symptoms of ADHD for more than a quarter of a century. A summary of the literature on trials that have validated the efficacy of this approach shows that, in many cases, behavior modification alone has not been sufficient to address severe symptoms of ADHD.
