No, not everyone should convert to SVO. Even though some of the first diesel engines burned unadulterated peanut oil, much has changed in engine design since then. We now have to lower the viscosity (thickness) of the oil to work efficiently in today's diesel engine. We can accomplish this by modifying the vegetable oil (turning it into biodiesel through a chemical reaction) or by modifying the vehicle (via a SVO conversion kit that heats the vegetable oil to a suitable viscosity).

Yes! In the summer of 2004, about 1/3rd of our 14,000 kilometer (8,700 mile) trans-continental journey was on WVO. (The other 2/3rds was on diesel due to expediency and injury.) In winter 2005, we did a 1100 kilometer (700mile) trip, using only 50 liters (13 gallons) of petro-diesel, again due to expediency. Nothing. If you have an older car the first time you switch to biodiesel, after about 20 hours of engine operation you should change the fuel filter. In much older cars (older than 1997) you may need to change the fuel hose, as biodiesel may soften and eventually cause older rubber fuel hoses to degrade. Newer hoses do not degrade.
