Either call the Albany County Sheriff’s office for their scheduled VIN inspection times or call the Dispatch Center at 307-721-2526 to make arrangements with the Laramie Police Department. The inspection is required if your vehicle was titled in another state and you are obtaining a Wyoming title. There is a fee at the Albany County Clerks office for the inspection.

When applying for a title on a motor vehicle previously registered or titled in another state, the VIN on the actual motor vehicle must be checked to ensure that the vehicle is the same as the one described on the proof of ownership. The VIN is located at the front of the unit on a plate mounted between the frame rails under the front fender.

The VIN is composed of 17 characters, where position 9 is a calculated number, which is called a "check digit". To calculate the VIN, the World Manufacture Identifier (WMI) code will be required. The most common place to find a VIN is on a plate attached to the top of the dashboard on the driver's side. The tag is designed to be visible through the windshield from outside the vehicle.

Most factory made motorcycles, quads, and vehicles do. If it doesn’t, you may use a serial number from the vehicle, usually located on the motor. Or you may use a description of the vehicle; color and number of seats, etc.

The most common reasons the BMV requires a VIN check on your vehicle include: (1.) you purchased a vehicle with an out-of-state title; (2.) you moved to Indiana from out-of-state; (3.) you purchased a trailer without a VIN number; (4.) you built a new trailer; and/or (5.) you have an error on your title. If the vehicle is inoperable or not legal to drive, you may call the police department at any time and we will send an officer to your location, within the city limits, to perform this service.

On scooters it may be located under a removable cover or stamped on a metal plate fixed to a frame member. Please refer to your Owner's Manual for exact location.
