The campus provides a Spam (unwanted email) filter however because there is no clear definition as to what constitutes Spam, this is not turned on by default. Furthermore, the mechanism for activating the Spam filter differs depending on your email client. The following document provides information on Spam filtering using Outlook. Please read the document carefully. Incorrect use of this technique could cause you to lose emails.

This is a very difficult thing to do, because Outlook does not expose the hooks that are necessary to cleanly do this (feel free to write to Microsoft and tell them that they should correct this). This means that even if you have set SpamBayes to mark spam as read, the envelope tray icon will not vanish.

You can also download Symantec Brightmail plugin for Outlook 2003 to identify spam. With a click of the button the email message that you identify as spam will be sent to Symantec. For all other desktop email clients, you must attach the original missed SPAM with the original SMTP headers. Please see the Help menu of your email client.

In Outlook (not Outlook Express!), you can filter the email headings, e.g. "To:", "From:" and "Subject:", in addition to defining own headers to filter. A possible set-up is to direct email from example@example.com to a separate folder. All emails through Domainnameshop's mail servers are flagged with a header if they are likely to be spam. This header is called "X-Spam-Flag:", and it is set to "YES" if an email is likely to be spam.

SPAM is email that you don't want, didn't ask for, and don't particularly wish to receive again. It is different for each person, and that is why it is so difficult to filter out. There is now a link that has been established between spam, virus writers and organized crime. Spam has become a very big business, and there are currently several companies attempting to eliminate it by various methods, but to no avail at present.

Spam is unsolicited commercial e-mail that is sent to vast numbers of recipients for the purpose of reaching individuals and groups that otherwise would not have requested the information. It is very much like the junk mail that you receive in your regular postal mailbox. Spammers will compose a message and send it to everyone on a list of e-mail addresses that was either purchased or collected from the Internet using worms, bots, or social engineering.

A list of trackbacks will appear. Select the offending trackback spam by clicking on the checkboxes next to the trackback(s). Click on the Delete button located at the top of the trackback list OR click on the Delete and Block button. The Delete button removes the offending trackback spam from your blog. The Delete and Block button not only deletes the offending trackback spam but also puts the referrer (or IP address) on a blacklist, preventing them from spamming you again.

As we tighten our spam tests, we start to filter legitimate messages being labeled as spam. This isn't an acceptable option. We've set the software at the point where very few legitimate messages are being discarded as spam.

Syracuse University manages spam with a system called BrightMail. This happens 'upstream' from Outlook. This is the same approach to spam management as it was in Novell/GroupWise. Outlook has an internal spam feature called Junk Mail that is not being utilized at the moment as it is redundant to the BrightMail system.

In the Rules Wizard window, select Start from a blank rule => Check messages when they arrive => Next In the Search Text window, enter your specific criteria for the rule and click Add. Click OK to return to the Rule Wizard window. Choose a folder where you want spam e-mail to be filtered. If necessary, click New and create a Junk E-mail folder as a subfolder in your Inbox folder. This will allow you to review all of your spam messages before deleting them. Click OK once finished.

Microsoft Outlook Express is not capable of filtering mail with 'custom' headers, which is a pre-requisite for using the Monash Client-Side email filters. In this case your best option is to use server-side Spam filtering, which filters email PRIOR to being accessed by Outlook Express or using another support Monash email client (e.g. Mozilla Thunderbird). The more powerful Microsoft Outlook CAN filter mail although it is preferred that you use the Monash supported client.

The problem with stopping all spam is that there is no single test that can determine conclusively whether a message is or isn't spam. Our software runs a series of tests on each email it receives. If a message fails enough tests, it's labeled as spam. Another reason that we can't get rid of all spam is that the spammers constantly find ways through our tests.

The name comes from a Monty Python skit (real audio) in which all normal conversation is drowned out by the word "spam" being repeated over and over again.

Answer: Spam, or Unsolicited Commercial E-Mail is a growing problem for all Internet users. Blocking the known marketers is the best tool we have against Spam at this time. However, from time to time Spam will leak through. The best way to manage Spam in cases like this is for each user to take steps to protect themselves.

There are lots of ways to help free your Inbox from junk e-mail messages. Using the Junk E-Mail filter in Microsoft Office Outlook 2003, for example, is just one method.
