Sooner or later, most people who own an S-100 system need to transfer a file to or from a DOS or Windows (or Macintosh or whatever) computer. IOMega ZIP drives and ZIP disks may offer you a way to move megabyte-sized files from old Macs to new Macs, or from your Mac to a Windows/Pentium PC. Q14: Can I read my 8" disks with my PC?

comp.os.cpm Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
With a program called 22disk, and an adaptor board that you can make, you can read those disks on your PC. All it takes is rearranging some of the lines on the 34 pin cable, and wiring them to the 50 pin cable, and you're in business. The interface on 8" drives and 5 1/4" drives are essentially the same. The 34 lines on a typical 5 1/4" controller are sufficient to control most 8" disk drives using soft-sectored disks.

Why can't I read floppy disks directly via my PC floppy drive?

Red Squirrel - Acorn Archimedes and RiscPC Emulator
Because it doesn't work yet. RedSquirrel is a Win32 application and as such is restricted to using the Win32 API. Windows doesn't support anything other than 512byte blocks on floppy/hard disks and Acorn disks use 1024 byte blocks. There are two ways around this, neither are pretty and neither work under Windows 2000. I had a half hearted attempt at writing a VXD to give me bios access but it hasn't been entirely successful. I will try again soon.

Can I build a PC- or Mac-based NLE system myself?

Home
Yes. If you don't mind opening the computer case and fiddling with the innards, you can buy one of the low-end or mid-range board sets and do it yourself. But be warned, it's not a trivial task. All of these systems are very new, and most still have some bugs and incompatibilities. Also, DV systems pushed the limits of what you could do with early-to-mid-1997 PCs and Macs.
