Social opportunities, philanthropic projects, community service, tradition, career networking, and becoming part of an international organization are all reasons mentioned for becoming part of the Greek community, but the one cited most often by members is the sense of brotherhood/sisterhood. After all, you don't have to join a fraternity or sorority to have a great social life in the University. You don't have to pay dues to a Greek letter organization to volunteer or raise money for a cause.

Nearly 5,000 IU undergraduates choose to join one of the 56 fraternities and sororities on campus. There is no pressure to do so, because students have many ways to meet their philanthropic, academic, athletic, social, leadership, and housing needs. Approximately 19% of the student body participates in the IU Greek system. A formal recruitment program is required for students interested in joining a Greek-letter organization.

No, approximately 20 of the 44 fraternities and sororities have chapter houses. An alumni corporation or an independent landlord owns some of the chapter houses.

Fraternities and sororities associated with IT are included in the list of IT student organizations, which can be found in the IT Student Survival Guide and on-line. Information about fraternities and sororities in the greek system is available from the Campus Involvement Center, which provides a list of all registered student groups. Fraternities and sororities have a very informal rush system, generally held in the fall and spring semesters.

PLU does not have a Greek system however the residence halls act as a student's second home. Each hall develops a character of its own and students thrive and grow through the camaraderie of the residence hall communities.

Approximately 15 - 20% of Carnegie Mellon’s students are members of the Greek system on campus. However, there are over 130 different clubs and activities and 17 varsity athletic teams at Carnegie Mellon in addition to the 11 fraternities and 5 sororities. There is no social pressure to get involved in any one of our non-academic activities.

Most of the general fraternities and sororities operate chapter houses adjacent to the campus which provide the opportunity for small group living. Since the membership recruitment process occurs during the quarter, new students should secure their own housing for the fall. Typically, freshmen live on-campus in residence halls, and many then move into fraternity and sorority houses their second year (residence hall contracts are on an annual basis).

About 25% of the student population at Syracuse University join either a fraternity or sorority. You are not eligible to "rush" until your second semester and must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5. There are currently 40 Greek Houses on campus. Greek life offers many outlets for academic, social and campus-wide involvement. Syracuse University's fraternities and sororities participate in the annual Homecoming events such as the skit competition and parade.

Fraternities and sororities, at both the local and national level, support a variety of philanthropic endeavors and sponsor events promoting awareness of relevant issues. Additionally, they participate in activities which promote unity within the chapter, and spirited events such as intramurals. One of the primary focuses of Greek Life is scholarship. All national organizations offer a large number of scholarships and fellowships for undergraduate and graduate work each year.

The Colgate community encourages the participation of non-Greek members in events sponsored by fraternities and sororities. There is no feeling of animosity between either Greek groups or members and non-members. The Interfraternity Council (IFC) and the Panhellenic Association are dedicated to maintaining a harmonious relationship among all Colgate students and promoting a positive image of the Greek community.
