If soil is not used, how do the plants grow?

FAQ: Hydroponics Gardening and Nutrition Information from Hi...
Soil does not make plants grow. It is merely a medium that supports the plants roots. It is the nutrients within the soil and photosynthesis that make the plant grow. In hydroponics, you provide all nutrients to the plants through a nutrient and water solution. And support to the roots through the use of a medium. See similar questions...

Why do plants grow quicker and produce more in a hydroponic system?

hydroponics faqs
Hydroponic systems basically spoon-feed plants their perfect food; they are highly efficient systems. In soil, plants spend a great deal of time and energy growing a large root system to find food and water. Additionally, nutrients in soil must be broken down first before they can be used, if they're even present. With hydroponics, because food and water are delivered directly to the roots, the plant can spend its energy on producing more vegetation, larger fruit, flowers and vegetables. Can plants grow in space?

NASA's Web of Life
Several flight experiments have been performed on plants, particularly on wheat. Part of the grass family, wheat is known as a cereal crop and typically used in making bread. In a microgravity environment, germinating seeds tend to grow normally with the shoots growing towards the light (positive phototropism). The roots do not exhibit phototropism, and they tend to grow whichever way they please. They will, nonetheless, usually stay within the moist medium in which the plant is growing. None. Orchids do not grow in soil. In the wild, most orchids are found high above the jungle floor, in the tree canopy. For best results, orchids should be grown either in New Zealand sphagnum moss, fine orchid bark mix or medium orchid bark Mix. Orchids must be grown in pots with good drainage. Soil is bad for the plants because it cuts off air circulation at the roots and blocks the drainage of water. See similar questions...

How often should I water my plants in my hydroponic system?

GreenCoast Hydroponics - Hydroponic System FAQ
How much you need to water depends on three things: the type of plants you're growing, the size of the plants, and the type of medium you're using. The first thing to decide is if your grow medium retains or repells water. You'll want your medium to dry out somewhat between waterings, so if you are using a medium that holds a lot of water, you'll need to water less frequently. See similar questions...

After the roots are somewhat clean go ahead and pot the plant in any of your favorite hydroponic media and begin a standard watering regimen. See similar questions...
