The floor should be sanded to abrade any remaining finish, and then thoroughly washed with a powdered cleaner such as Spic-n-Span. Use water as sparingly as possible, and allow the floor to dry thoroughly. Once you are certain that the floor is dry, apply one coat of Hollandlac Oil Primer and allow to dry for at least 24 hours. The floor should then be lightly sanded with a 150-grit paper to the desired level of smoothness, vacuumed and tacked dust-free.

It’s very difficult. K&M can try to extract paint from carpet fiber, and its technicians have been successful in doing that in some cases; however, paint is very hard to get out of carpet once it dries.

Floor paints, also called deck enamels, are for walk-on surfaces. Ordinary high-gloss enamel is not suitable. Floor enamels are formulated to withstand weather and wear on wood and concrete. They come in both oil-based and latex formulas. Oil-based paints are not recommended for many concrete surfaces, especially those in contact with ground moisture, such as basements and patios, because they will not adhere to damp surfaces.

There are tools designed especially for this purpose. The Super Guide by Hyde? Tools is a metal shield that can be placed between the carpet and the baseboard allowing you to paint one section at a time. Another method is taping the carpet with masking tape or masking paper.

If you plan on painting the room we suggest doing this prior to the new floor being installed. Old carpet, vinyl, etc make for a great drop rag. If you plan on wallpapering, we suggest this project be completed after the new floor is installed. Some flooring products have stiff backs and can damage wallpaper and painted walls quite easily. Touching up a painted area requires minimal work. Touching up a wallpapered area can be a daunting task.

We recommend removing exotic birds from the newly carpeted areas until the smell is gone. Ventilating the carpet for approximately 48 to 72 hours.

This is erroneous information, most “off-gassing” of new carpet is within the first 24 hours or so. Properly ventilate with good air exchange for approximately 48 to 72 hours. The new carpet smell should dissipate within this time.

Unless your carpet is very thick, do not include it in your measurement. The weight of your stair, several hundred pounds, will compress the carpet below its present level. On the second floor, a carpet is usually not thick enough to become a tripping point.

Many people ask us if we can paint the deck floor and while we can do that, we strongly discourage it. Deck floors are constantly saturated with water. This cause's severe movement which most paints and solid stains cannot tolerate, eventually causing them to peel. Once this happens, the maintenance of your deck floor becomes much more difficult and costly.

Carpet will slow the transfer of heat to the living space, but it can't stop it. In most cases, increasing the number of aluminum heat transfer plates in a staple-up system will eliminate the increased "lag time" created by carpet. Installing a rubber carpet pad instead of a urethane one will also help. Using carpet over a heated slab will simply result in warm carpet that effortlessly heats the room.

If the carpet has not been destroyed by years of water damage, enough of it can be moved or removed to provide clearance for the Basement De-Watering System?.
