Turn the PC on and immediately start tapping the DELETE or DEL key. Keep tapping this (approx 2/3 times a second will suffice) until a menu appears. This is the BIOS. Use the LEFT/RIGHT arrow keys on the keyboard to move along the upper menu until you highlight BOOT. The boot device list will appear (There may be a pause before this list appears) Press the + (Plus symbol) on the keypad (far right on keyboard) to move the ATAPI CD-ROM or floppy disk heading up the list.

Plug an ISA Multi-IO card, connect your floppy drive there, and flash your BIOS again, this time with one that really is for your motherboard.

This is only an issue for machines that support network booting (also called PXE). In this case the boot order should be cdrom, floppy, hard disk, network. This means on bare hardware the first boot will network boot as no OS is installed on the hard disk. This PXE boot will load the Red Hat installation kernel and install the node just as if the node were booted with the Rocks CD. If you select the boot order to place PXE before hard disk to node will repeatedly re-install itself.

Before booting this floppy, take some time to explore its contents, as the disk has a filesystem on it that can be mounted and perused. To do this, insert a COPY of the Essential Utilities Floppy 1 (from now on, "the boot floppy") into the drive with a write-protect tab. Now, Because boot floppies vary from release to release, it would be most helpful to simply get a listing of the contents of your particular boot floppy.

This feature requires meddling into file system. Running such low-level utilities like Norton Disk Doctor, Scandisk, etc. may damage hidden folders in this case. Windows 2000/XP has a powerful built-in file system security subsystem. But you can set up access control policy only for NTFS volumes. Unfortunately it is not easy to specify access control policy in Windows XP Home edition. Moreover it is only possible to lock folders on NTFS volumes.

If you are using the KDE or Gnome Desktop Environments, using a floppy or CDROM is as easy as inserting your disc and clicking on the appropriate icon on the desktop. You can then read, copy, or delete files (delete from floppy only) to and from the device. It is VERY important to unmount the media before removing it from the drive. In fact, CDs will not let you open the tray unless they are unmounted.

Modern machines can’t read the 400k and 800k floppy disks used by the Mac Plus. This a hardware problem, not solvable in software - they lack the variable speed motor of the old drives. I don’t know any reason why some company couldn’t now manufacture a floppy drive that reads the old disks, but I’m not aware of anyone doing so. So the only way to read such disks is to get an old Mac.

Most of the public access computers in the library have DVD/CD drives and a USB port for flash drives only. They do not have floppy disk drives. Some computers near the Reference Desk on the main (second) floor still have floppy disk drives; ask a reference librarian to point them out if needed.

Right now, there are computers available on the second floor that offer floppy drives, though we really suggest you invest in a USB drive.

Ark Linux does not support installation from a floppy disk; however, there is some free software available which will allow you to install Ark Linux from CD even if your BIOS does not support booting from CD-ROM. The easiest way to create a btmgr floppy is simply getting the FreeDOS boot image, it contains btmgr and allows you to boot from the Ark Linux CD. You can write the image to a floppy using dd if=fdos1440.img of=/dev/fd0 obs=128k in Linux, or [rawrite] in DOS/Windows.

If you have a IDE Zip® or Jaz® drive installed, remove it and try again. The boot floppy can get confused by the drives. After the system is installed you can reconnect the drive. Hopefully this will be fixed in a later release.

First of all you need a BIOS *.BIN file that you'll first edit and flash afterwards. Please make sure that BIOS file you're going to edit is the correct one for your motherboard. Once you have the EPA file you'll need to find CBROM or CBROM6 to insert the EPA file into the *.BIN file. The syntax is : cbrom *.BIN /EPA savedEPA.epa (where *.BIN is the filename of the BIOS file, savedEPA.epa the filename of the EPA file.). CBROM should be used on Award V4.

In Windows Explorer or My Computer, use your right mouse button to click the icon for the floppy disk you want to copy, and then choose Copy Disk from the shortcut menu. Click the drive you want to copy from and the drive you want to copy to, and then click Start.

Go to Explorer, insert a floppy disk, right-click on the A Drive, click Format, check Make System disk and click OK.

A drive may be manually mounted by selecting Places/Computer and then right clicking on the floppy drive icon and choosing Mount Volume. The drive can then be accessed from this window as well as the corresponding drive icon on the desktop. Be sure to unmount the disk or drive before removing it in order to prevent the disk from becoming damaged or risk having data lost.

The solution is simple. Just get Recover Fixed/Floppy Disk v2.2. It has a special switch to supply Boot Record thereby making DOS to work on the floppy as good as on a good one with a good Boot sector.

The BIOS Boot Specification (BBS) Version 1.01 is an emerging standard co-developed by Phoenix, Compaq, Intel, and Microsoft. The purpose of this new functionality is to allow the end user selection of multiple boot devices and the ability to change the boot order. In addition, this functionality utilizes Plug and Play technology to identify boot devices.

Well, you can mimic etherboot with a floppy even if your NIC doesn't have a boot ROM. This mean you can use a floppy to connect to the DHCP and TFTP server and download the rest. Maybe a bit slow during boot, but it works well. Goto http://www.rom-o-matic.net/ and download an image for your NIC. Follow the instructions on that site to make a net bootable floppy. A:Yes, but obviously only if you boot from local media.
