Can I build my own kart chassis?

Los Angeles Kart Club: Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, but it's not worth it. Race karts have become so high-tech and competition between manufacturers so fierce that if you wanted to build a competitive chassis, you would have to spend far more money in research than it would cost you to buy one off the shelf. But don't worry, in karting there are enough adjustments you can make and little gadgets you can build to keep the engineer in you quite content.

All chassis tubing components are cut right at the factory. Most of the sheet metal components are sublet to a CNC punch shop where tolerances are less than +/- .010". All separate components are MIG or TIG welded right in our own jigs at the factory. When you visit us, look at the high quality of the welds. Our certified welders are the best! Suspension components are done the same way. Arms are cut and jig welded right here. The GT arms are TIG welded. See similar questions...

What is the chassis made of?

DeLorean - PJ Grady Europe DeLorean - useful info
The chassis frame is made of mild steel, covered with an epoxy resin. The frames were initially made from stainless steel too, but were too expensive - so were later developed from mild steel with the epoxy coating. The frame is one of the most common parts of a DeLorean to rust or corrode, and is perhaps the most important thing to check when buying a car. PJ Grady Europe have fixed many frames that had badly corroded. Details of this can be found within the 'Repairs' section of this website. See similar questions...

Can I build an aftermarket-chassis-modified clod without buying the Clod kit?

SYSTEM BLOODCLOD - Radio Controlled Monster Trucks (RCMTs)
Yes you can, but you will need to purchase all the parts to build the front and rear gearboxes, the axles, rims and wheels. I've not calculated this myself but some who have claim that the cost of this is almost equivalent to buying the whole kit. In my opinion, getting the entire kit is less troublesome and you get all the other parts too (body, chassis, shocks, etc.). See similar questions...

Why do you bond the body to the chassis?

FIA Frequently Asked Questions
The results are a stiffer overall structure, with no rattles, creaks or shakes. Our fiberglass bodies do not get stress cracks, even after many hard miles on the road. It is a bit more work, but well worth it! Some claim that their body is "unstressed" because it is rubber mounted to the chassis . Wrong! The outside shell must still be supported with inner panels or some other structure. The method of that connection is what determines whether stress cracks will appear. See similar questions...

What is the chassis dynamometer?

Hendrick's in-house chassis engineering department
A chassis dyno is different from the engine dyno. It is an instrument that gives measurements of power. The engine has a reading of amount of horsepower, but some of that power is lost when the car goes around the track. Putting the race car on the chassis dyno measures how much power is lost through the drive line, and then engineers can perfect the drive line so it is more efficient. See similar questions...

Where would I get a chassis for my trailer?

The Squidget Photo Gallery
I made my own 5' x 9' chassis from locally purchased steel and axle. My axle is a Dexter Torflex torsions axle for a softer suspension, although a spring axle can be used. A ready-made 5' x 8' chassis could be modified to 9' long, although the axle placement might have to be moved to achieve the correct tongue weight. Having a trailer made by a local manufacturer to my specs is an option. Finding an old trailer that can be purchased cheaply and stripped down to the frame is another option. Same difference. In fact, most people will consider both to mean the same. Others make a distinction that a 'kart' is the serious racing vehicle, while a 'go-kart' is a fun-machine, a toy of sorts. It can be argued either way, but most commonly, the serious racer will refer to his or her vehicle only as 'kart'. See similar questions...

Answer: Unlike many concession style tracks, at Speedworld we take performance of our karts seriously.
