OHV recreation is just one of the many uses allowed on National Forest lands. OHV travel is regulated by the OHV travel plan; check with the closest Ranger Station for specific areas. It is your responsibility to know and abide by regulations relating to motor vehicle travel. State law requires registration of all motor vehicles before being operated on public lands.

Bulldog Canyon (off Usery Pass Road) requires a permit. Contact the Mesa Ranger Station to obtain the permit. OHV/ATVs can also be ridden on most forest routes (roads and trails). State law requires you to be street legal to drive on any road maintained by a city, county or the state. This includes a state license plate (similar to your car or truck plate--not a title plate generally given to you when you buy a new ATV), insurance and you must be a licensed driver.

There are thousands of miles of established dirt roads in the Eastern Sierra. Some range from drivable by two wheel drive to very challenging four wheel drive routes. We ask that you stay on existing dirt roads. There is one open area east of Bishop managed by the Inyo National Forest. This area is called Poleta Canyon and can be accessed by taking East Line Street out of Bishop and traveling approximately 9 miles east. The area will be marked where open riding is allowed.

In most areas of National Forest, you need to stay on roads and trails that are open to motorized travel. You may not take your ATV behind a closed gate, or travel OFF the road or trail (cross-country), unless the area is specifically designated for that use. Motorized vehicles are not allowed in any Wilderness Area. You should contact the local Forest office for more details and maps to help you learn where you may ride.

You can ride on gravel surface roads that are not gated, bermed or marked closed. OHV riding can be restricted when fire danger is high. Tennessee State Parks do not have any ATV trails. The Department of Agriculture, Division of Forestry addresses this in their website at: Off-road vehicles may use only unpaved roadways maintained by the Forestry Division and not the public roadways unless they and their vehicles are licensed for the public roadways.

If you plan to ride on the 'roads' then yes you must be a licensed driver and your vehicle must be licensed as well. However, a drivers license is not required to ride 'off-road'.

You may NOT ride an ATV, off-road vehicle, motorcycle, or other motorized vehicle anywhere on Corps of Engineers property that encompasses Lake Cumberland. Under common law, pedestrians, horse riders and carriage drivers have public user rights over the whole width of land designated a highway. Usually this is between the hedges and fences on either side of the carriageway and this area may include verges.
