Assuming you've gone to a 17" wheel, 275s should fit without any problems. You should even be able to get away with 285s. As for 315s, they will stick out from under the wheel well, but not excessively. If you have a stock panhard rod, it's likely they will rub in inner wheel well under hard and uneven cornering, possibly resulting in loss of control of the vehicle. But a stiffer panhard rod and jounce bumper spacers (available from SLP), you'll be much safer.

To attain maximum life, you will need to keep a close eye on your tires. Check them every 4k miles or so. If the middle is wearing too much, lower the pressuer a few pounds. If the edges (either) is wearing too much, raise the pressure. On the street, less pressure (compared to the track) will result in longer tire life and a softer ride.

Without any modifications, 15" x 8.5" wheels (front and back) with 4.5" backspacing and P245/60R15 tires will fit. For 16" x 10" (front) and 16" x 10.5" (rear) with 5.375" backspacing and P255/50R16 tires, the inner lip of the fenders will have to folded under. Also the control arm (near the upper ball joint) may have to be grinded up front and shock mount clearance should be checked in the rear.

If you do a lot of winter driving, it's best to consider a set of winter snow/ice tires. Chains are not recommended on a Subaru, it's a clearance issue. Spider chains are ok because they don't go on the inside of the wheel. If you can't use those and absolutely must use chains, use 'Z' chains though again this is not recommended.
