The quickest way to obtain a copy of your Veterans Discharge Papers is to visit this office. You must bring with you several forms of identification including at least one picture ID. The charge is $2.50.

You may search for the cross reference or microfiche number by clicking on the Service Discharges link on the Recorder's Home Page and searching the database by name. Once you have this reference number, you may contact the Recorder's Office at (937)225-6494 and request a copy. Please keep in mind that Service Discharges are not required to be recorded in the County Recorder's Office.

Hopefully, you registered it with your local county clerk upon returning home. If so, it would be readily available to you. If not, the Collin County Veteran Services Office can send a form to the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) requesting a copy be sent to you. You should receive requested copy in two to four months. Yes there is. After discharge from the military, veterans place their military discharge (Form DD-214) on file with the County Clerk's Office, in the county in which they reside. If you do not have a copy of your discharge papers, service records, or medical records you can obtain them by filling out a Standard Form 180 - Request Pertaining to Military Records. A: To obtain a certificate in lieu of a lost or destroyed discharge, a veteran separated under honorable conditions should use Standard Form 180. You can now request your DD214 or other military documents through the National Archives website. Once you have completed the request you are still required to print and sign the form and mail or fax it in within 20 days or the request. The Cost is FREE. They only will mail copies to you, they still are unable to send you electronic copies (but they are working on it).

While we will certify you for benefits without a DD214 we ask that you obtain one as soon as possible. We are required by State law to retain a copy in your file in our office. Also there is always a possibility that not having a DD214 can hold the processing of your benefits by the VA.

The entire original DD214 is required and a Drivers License with photograph, State issued Identification Card, Passport or Military Identification Card with photograph.

There is a short form to complete and identification must be presented before a military discharge can be issued. There is no fee. To file papers, bring or mail them to the Recorder's office. There is no fee and the original document will be returned to you.
