Fence-All - FAQ for Wood Fences

Should I clean my new deck prior to staining?

Cabots - faq - cabots.com.au
It is a common misconception that new wood does not need to be washed prior to staining, and that clear water alone is sufficient to remove surface contamination. In fact, all wood whether new or aged, needs to be thoroughly cleaned before the application of any product. It is common for a low level of microscopic mildew spores, invisible to the naked eye, to exist on wood surfaces alongside all the dirt, grease and oils that settle out of the air. What is high blood pressure and how is it treated?

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) - Texas Heart Institute Hea...
Your heart pumps blood through a network of arteries, veins, and capillaries. The moving blood pushes against the arterial walls, and this force is measured as blood pressure. High blood pressure results from the tightening of very small arteries (arterioles) that regulate the blood flow through your body. As these arterioles tighten (or constrict), your heart has to work harder to pump blood through the smaller space, and the pressure inside the vessels grows. See similar questions...

How long should I wait before I paint or stain my deck?

FAQ on Treated Lumber
Even though the lumber may be kiln-dried before treatment, using water-borne preservatives restores moisture to the wood. Too much moisture in the wood may prevent the stain or paint from penetrating the wood sufficiently. It is best to test the wood by painting or staining a scrap piece to see if it applies properly. If not, wait until it does. A water repellent should be applied annually. Do not use latex paints. Semi-transparent, oil-based stains work best. See similar questions...

ARE THERE ANY CONCERNS WITH PAINTING TREATED WOOD?

FAQ
No. The finishing properties of wood treated with waterborne preservatives such as CCA or borate depend primarily on the wood properties, not the preservative treatment. However, you'll get more life out of your wood finishes, and especially stains, when you're using CCA-treated wood. CCA-treated wood contains chromium, which is known to decrease the effects of weathering. The effects of the newer preservatives (CA and ACQ) are unclear. See similar questions...

But if you painted using Alizarin Crimson to make a half inch thick layer using poppy oil as a medium then the painting may not be ready to varnish in two years, if ever! How to tell if a painting is ready to varnish is easy—just touch it. See similar questions...
