Students from throughout the democracies of the Western Hemisphere attend the Institute. Delegates attend the program late in high school, and have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement, leadership in school and community activities, and a genuine interest in the sciences. Each country has its own competitive process to select delegates.

We recently conducted a study of real delegates with the permission of a leading international conference company. The results indicated that a transcription is worth between $195 and $295 (depending on the richness and nature of the conference content). In addition, the provision of a transcript to a sponsor can add up to $15,000 to the amount charged for the sponsorship package, with very low cost to fulfill.

The delegates committee received over 400 applications to attend SGS. It was an incredibly competitive pool of highly qualified applicants from over 70 countries. Four organizers then judged the applicants using pre-determined selection criteria. In our experience a small percentage of buyers experience unavoidable last-minute problems which prohibit them from attending the forum. However, we do have agreements with all our buyer delegates that in such instances they should send a suitable replacement. If they cannot attend we reserve the right to charge a cancellation fee based on the costs incurred. The number of delegates (and, alternates) is based on the number of members as reported by the District Three Treasurer as of January 31 of each year. Each club has the same number of alternates. Alternates serve at Conference only when the delegate is unable to fulfill the obligation. Once an alternate replaces a delegate, a change back to the original delegate cannot be made.

Because the Youth Science Leadership Institute is only five hours from the nation's capital, delegates are able to take advantage of the area's extensive scientific and cultural offerings during their time in Washington. Delegates have the opportunity to tour some of the scientific sites and meet scientists and policymakers. Delegates also may spend some time in the capital's many museums, historic buildings, and monuments during the trip.

Many Conference events take place there and we want to ensure that you don't miss out on any of the action or after-hours networking opportunities. In addition, in order to keep Conference registration fees low, the League enters into agreements with the Conference hotel that require us to fill a certain number of hotel rooms.
