A16. Mushrooms Canada advises the public of the potential health risks associated with picking and eating wild mushrooms. Edible mushrooms may appear similar to poisonous mushrooms. Unless you are an expert at mushroom identification or are advised by an expert, our advice is to not consume wild mushrooms. If poisonous wild mushrooms are consumed, it may take several days for symptoms to develop; which may include but are not limited to: nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and diarrhea.

Mushroom picking is permitted on provincial forest lands, but permission is required to pick on First Nations reserves, tree farm licences, leased Crown land, and private lands. Mulch is an ideal growing medium for many wild fungi. These fungi spores are spread in the woods where the bark was originally harvested, as well as in the wind in your neighborhood, and in your soil. When conditions are right, they will grow. Occasionally in "pods" a foot in diameter in bright colors. They are not harmful and may be controlled either with garden fungicide or by simply spraying them with a diluted bleach solution. Yes. It is only an offence to uproot any plant without the landowner's permission or to pick any part of the 170 or so specially protected species which are very rare. Please do not thoughtlessly pick the flowers of any wild plants. The flowers are an essential part of their reproductive cycle and so this may threaten the survival of the population. In most cases, yes. Most of the body of a fungus is hidden in the ground or in dead wood. The mushrooms and toadstools that we see are temporary, spore-producing organs. Therefore picking most mushrooms and toadstools does not kill the organism. On the mineral soils of many fields radiocaesium can be strongly bound to certain clay minerals. Thus, it can only be taken up by roots to a limited extent. Forests are characterised by organic layers on the mineral soils. In these layers which are formed of decomposing mulch, caesium is easily available and is quickly taken up by soil organisms, mushrooms and plants.

After about 1 or 2 weeks, pinheads will start to develop. Pinheads are baby mushrooms. Once pinheads appear, mushrooms will develop quickly.
