Paving stones can be shoveled and plowed the same as a concrete or asphalt pavement. The chamfered edges around the paving stones help to prevent the edges of the plow from hitting the comers of the stones. A plow with a rubber edge is preferred. Rock salt and calcium chloride will melt snow and ice, but they can also harm the paving stones.

We will safely work around the parked car(s) and clean up any remaining snow on our next pass. Because our routes are often cleared in the middle of the night, we will not disturb the occupants of the house to move their cars. If possible, we ask that you park on one side of the driveway rather than the middle. This allows us to clear the unoccupied side rather than nothing at all. If there's heavy snow in your driveway, there's probably also heavy snow on the roads.

Yes, provided you have ample room to allow for the additional 3 inches that will be above the concrete. If this is going into a doorway, you may have a problem with clearance. Also, the concrete should be free of any major cracks. Remember, any movement in the concrete slabs that you are going over will show themselves in the surface of the paving stones.

In an ideal world the snow would fall in short blocks, then have long breaks. In our world, the snow falls in inconsistantly and sporadically. Your contract with ALPINE SMITH, Inc. guarantees you one snow removal per 24 hour period. While this is usually sufficient, we do reccomend you prepare yourself to remove the snowfall from small storms that may be less than 6"

Try to move it to an unused part of your driveway or yard.  Please do not shovel snow from your sidewalk into the street.  It is illegal.  Don't leave old chairs, trash bags, or other objects in on-street parking spaces - they will be hauled away. TOP

No permit is required for painting but make sure the painting contractor has a City of San Marino business license. A paving permit is required only if you are proposing to increase the current amount of front yard paving.

Actually, that depends more upon the conditions inherent in the landscape, than in the type of surface you have or want. Weeds will grow where they have opportunity. With properly installed paving stones (excavate 8"-10", add 6" road base, 1" bedding sand, sand joints, compacted), this is no more of a problem that with other surfaces which crack and allow weeds a place to take root. In general, the sand is too sterile, the subsurface too compact and the joints too small for weeds to grow.

Yes. All Living Stone paving is suitable for indoor use. However, a proprietary sealant is strongly recommended to protect against dusting and staining of the surface. See further advice below.

We recommend that you do not plow your Sierra Stone surface. The blade of a snowplow will scrape and scratch the surface; it can also chip the textured areas. We recommend using a plastic shovel and/or snow blower over these surfaces.

Snow is removed as it begins to accumulate. First, we concentrate on major streets, hills, hazardous intersections and school areas. Then attention is given to residential areas.

Clear it out yourself; we wish we had the resources to return and plow this away but we do not. The first priority is the roadway, the snow bank is a result of the plow passing and usually is not avoidable.

Do NOT push snow into the road. Pile it away from the road edge to allow access to your mailbox and avoid problems with visibility when entering or exiting your driveway.

Pull and/or scrape out the weeds with a screwdriver and clean crack with whiskbroom. You may also purchase week killer at your local home center ? Ortho Weed Killer does a great job but you will have to wait for weeds to die. Another solution, believe it or not, is to put table salt in the cracks... within a couple of days the grass should be gone.

was the driest year of the three previous runnings, and there were short snowbanks to cross over most of the major passes, with a substantial amount (thigh deep) below Virginus Pass. In '95 almost the entire course was under snow, and the run was cancelled because of it. Expect anything in between. We'll post periodic snow reports here, as the season progresses. You can also check them yourself. There are unseasonable bare spots on the peaks above Silverton.

If a stain does appear on your stone there are ways to remove it. The most important step is to identify the type of stain (oil, ink, organic, etc.). Once the type of stain has been determined then the appropriate cleaning product can be used. Please contact us for advice should you need it. Most stone products are sealed just before or just after installation. When properly sealed and cared for, natural stone will resist most stains.

Oil and grease stains can be difficult to remove completely because they penetrate the concrete surface rapidly. If an oil spill occurs, stop it spreading by encircling with sand, dirt or sawdust. Soak up as much surface oil or grease as possible with an absorbent cloth or powder. Cover residue stain with a poultice made of 1 part lime to 2 parts mineral turpentine. Spread a 5mm layer of the paste over the stained area ensuring a margin of 50 to 100mm around edges.

Snow will be plowed to the curbline on most routes, causing a snowberm to be left across the driveways. These berms will not be cleared by City staff. In residential areas, a snowplow berm will not go across any driveway clearly marked with "orange warning stakes." City staff ask that only those residents who are physically unable to remove the snowberm to mark their driveways with the orange stakes. Orange warning stakes are available at no charge at the front desk in City Hall.

Due to the nature of our equipment and the long standing operational procedures and equipment used, the District does not remove snow from your driveway. The cost of retrofitting equipment has been deemed too great by successive Councils. Time needed to clean driveways as well as the roads would double, as well, there would be a need to increase staff and equipment. Who determines where and who gets snow removal first? I have a home-based business and need my street done first.
