Until recently, my main flat top you have seen me use in concert was made by John Colvin in the early 90's. I've used it on several recordings: Short Stories, Flatpick & Clawhammer, Promised Land, Rhyme Schemes, and most of Top Drawer String Band, How Like The Holly, and Six Of One. It's a lovely guitar - it always delivers what I ask of it. Not the fanciest looking guitar but a sonic jewel. I think of it as a "Shaker" guitar - simple and functional.

A Taylor (no relation) guitar - 910. This is a large dreadnaught guitar with a wider than normal finger board and light gauge strings. He asked Taylor Guitars to build it with a 12-string guitar neck for the added width, then modified the nut slightly for added spacing for the high and low strings of his 6-string configuration.

Alvarez, Yamaha, Seagull, and Takamine make good quality (less expensive) student model steel-string acoustic guitars. Look into used guitars as well; sometimes you can get a bargain. I would definitely try to find an instrument with a solid wood top rather than a plywood top. You might also consider getting a classic guitar with nylon strings. The necks are considerably wider than an acoustic guitar with steel strings.

Julian prefers acoustic guitars and plays a 1957 Gibson, a 12 string Taylor and a CJ 32 Yamaha.
