Ex-Dividend - A synonym for "without dividend." The buyer of an ex-dividend stock is not entitled to the next dividend payment. Dividends are paid quarterly to all those shareholders recorded on the books of the company as of a previous date of record. For example, a dividend may be declared as payable to stockholders of record on a given Friday.

The payable date is sometimes before the ex-dividend date! How comes?

You still must own the stock at market opening on the ex-dividend date to get the distribution.
