When should I apply? The deadline for fall admission is May 15, but we start admitting students early in February. Applications that are received after we have started the admission process have a reduced chance of admission because there will be fewer open positions remaining. For fall applicants, we recommend that the application be mailed no later than mid-January in order to have the best chance of admission. The answer to both questions is yes.

You can still take the TOEFL iBT test if you come late to the test center up to one hour past the scheduled test time. If you are more than one hour late, then you cannot take the TOEFL iBT test and you will NOT be refunded for the cost of the test.

Initially, we advise an international applicant to attach photocopies of his/her score reports with the application, but official reports issued by ETS will be required before full processing of that application will take place. In some instances, the Graduate School will accept certified copies of these reports.

Most universities still accept the PBT scores. However, you should check with the universities to determine their specific requirements.

The minimum score required on the general GRE is 70 percent in the analytical and quantitative sections. However, this is a minimum requirement, and applicants who are offered admission generally have much higher scores. There is no minimum score for the GRE subject test.

In the paper version of the exam, test takers answer the same questions in the same order. In the TOEFL computer-adaptive test, the computer "adapts" to the test taker's performance. The first question is of medium difficulty. If answered correctly, the next question given will be more difficult. If answered incorrectly, the following question will be easier. The Test progresses according to this formula, and the level of difficulty is factored into the score.

A score of 500 (TOEFL), 173 (TOEFLC) or 45 (TOFEL IBT-on combined reading, listening, and writing) or higher is required in order to be admitted. Admitted applicants with a score between 500 and 580 will need to take additional ESL courses. A diagnostic placement test will need to be taken upon arriving in Seattle to determine which course you will be placed into. For the paper-based exam, a total score of 600 or higher is required, and the scores for each individual section must be 60 or higher. For the computer-based exam, a total score of 250 or higher is required, and the scores for each individual section must be 25 or higher. These TOEFL requirements are strictly adhered to by the University. The University cannot issue any visa-related paperwork if TOEFL scores are below the stated minimum requirements. No exceptions.

If a student does not receive the minimum score required on the admission test, they have three (3) options: a) Take the test again. Sometimes, if the score is close and the student feels the low score was due to test anxiety or a bad testing day, this option is the easiest and most convenient. However, this is not the option to choose if the deadline for resolving provisional admission status is near. b) Take the other admissions test. Different people will do well on different tests.

For foreign applications, we require a TOEFL score of 600. While your GRE score is important, we have no specific cut-off for GRE scores, and consider the GRE score to be just one part of your overall application. All applicants must submit a GRE score to be considered for fellowships or graduate teaching assistantships.

It is recommended that you take the GRE no later than the October exam, possibly even November. Scores will be sent to the Graduate School two to three weeks after you take the exam. You may self-report scores to us via e-mail as soon as they are available to you (psygrad@u.washington.edu), or fax them to us at (206) 685-3157. If you must take the exam in December, scores received after January 1 run the risk of missing important selections committee review meetings.

The minimum TOEFL score requirement to apply is 500 for the paper-based tests, and 173 for computer-based tests. TOEFL scores must be less than two years old.

Community College of Philadelphia does not require the TOEFL score, but if you have taken the TOEFL test and your score is above 520 (190 computer test), you do not have to take the ESL Placement Test, a test that evaluates your English skills. If you pass the ESL Placement Test or have the TOEFL score above 520 (190 computer test), you will not be required to take the College's placement test for admission.

International students have to score a minimum 213 (computer-based); 550 (paper-based) or minimum IBT (internet-based test) - Speaking (23), Listening (19), Reading (19) and Writing (15). The scores can't be older than two years.
