You really should not keep two Syrian hamsters in the same cage. Even if a pet shop tells you that you can, they are wrong. I must point out that this applies to the large Syrian hamsters who live as individuals and are very territorial. Dwarf hamsters are communal and do live together. However, yes, in some cases it is possible to keep two same-sex hamsters together. They would need to be introduced as pups. For instance 2 brothers, 2 sisters, or mother and daughter.

In general we would say about 2 years. Like humans some may die a little earlier (say 18 months) and some may go on and on and on. We have had three hamsters live until they were 3 years old and we have heard of a few living longer again. Each hamster is an individual.

Hamsters have a natural desire to chew and this is because their teeth never stop growing - kind of like fingernails. It is not hurting them to chew on the bars of the cage, however it probably means that they are not being given enough things to chew on. Try giving them different types of wood blocks made for small animals such as niblet munchies and bunny bites. This is flavored wood and most hamsters love it. You can also give them empty toilet paper rolls to keep them busy.

This is not a good idea because chins need a specific type of diet compared to other species of animals. This can also create stress for them causing them to chew off their fur resulting in digestive disorders.

Yes they can see something. I think that they can make out details for a couple of inches and beyond that they only seem to see big objects. One of my hamsters was able to follow my hand when I moved it several inches away from his ball. They can watch a human from across the room and will wait until the human is out of sight before running out of the room. But I have also seen hamsters sprint towards a wall or door and not see it in time to stop before hitting it.

If you have a Syrian hamster, often called the "Teddy Bear Hamster", the answer is "no". Syrian hamsters are solitary, if you try to keep two together one will eventually kill the other. If, on the other hand, you have Campbells dwarf Russian, or Winter White Siberian hamsters the answer is "usually". If you buy a pair of young hamster siblings from the pet store then they will most likely be fine.

Technically it's not hibernation, but they will slow down their body functions (they become "torpid") if the room temperature of the room they are in gets unusually low, but shouldn't just go into hibernation just because it's the winter season. If your hamster reaches this state, in most cases do not to disturb them. Let them come out of it naturally. Golden hamsters become sluggish at about 14C and torpid at about 10C.

The metal bars of a cage can seriously damage a bird's feathers as it grows older, and needs to stretch out its wings. If the wingfeathers keep breaking off against the bars, the bird may not learn to fly properly, or not have the plumage to fly effectively. Besides, wild birds don't belong behind bars. The answer here is a cautious "yes." We have successfully housed more than one boa together and have even had productive breeding occur. Rosy Boas are not cannibalistic by nature. They are thought to be "loners" in nature for the most part, although some think they may congregate in small numbers to brumate. We have found on occasion that a boa becomes stressed when too crowded, begins to feed poorly or regurgitate, then does much better when housed alone.

mentioned elsewhere, Kingsnakes in the wild will feed on other snakes including other Kingsnakes. Therefore, it is a risk to house two together. If this must be done, then much care should be taken to separate them during feeding time. They should be kept separate for a while after feeding since the feeding response is accompanied by hormonal responses that may keep them in the hunting mode. One should make every attempt to house Kingsnakes separately except when attempting to breed them.

Place the cage away from sources of intense heat and cold, such as windows, radiators, fireplaces, air conditioners and exterior doors. Never locate a cage in the kitchen if you use nonstick-coated cookware. The fumes can be lethal to birds.
