A product must pass all the tests related to the specified list of features which are based on RFC standards 3261 and related RFCs for trunk and line-side SIP interfaces. For most switches VLANs have no impact on IntraVUE. RFC 1493, the Bridge MIB, requires switches to respond with the port numbers for any MAC addresses known to the switch - regardless of VLAN. Cisco is a notable exception. Cisco uses a technique called Community String Indexing developed when VLANs were just being implemented and Cisco switches respond to Bridge MIB requests depending on the community string used. This depends on the definition of firewall. Some writers (e.g., Gene Spafford in _Practical UNIX Security_) define a firewall as a host on which an ''inside'' and/or an ''outside'' application process run, with application-level code linking the two. For example, a firewall might provide FTP access to the outside world, but it would not also provide direct FTP service to the inside world.
