The usual rule of thumb is to walk at least 50 miles in your new boots before wearing them for an extended hike. Start with short walks. You don't want to get halfway into a 15-mile hike and realize you've got a new blister forming. Wear the boots when you walk to work, to the grocery store, to do errands. When that seems comfortable, do a few short hikes in them. Aim for a couple of 10-mile day hikes in these boots before you head out for a full week.

Despite the rough terrain and many miles of cross country travel, you will probably be much better off in running shoes, although one of the modern lug soled running/hiking shoe hybrids might not be an unreasonable choice. I usually wear my running shoes when I go backpacking anyway. However, you'll want to pack several pairs of whatever you wear, and bring lots of extra socks. By far the best way to break-in new boots is to skate in them. First, start by spending a session or two just stroking forward, stroking backward and doing simple spinning. When the boots feel comfortable, add the basic jumps you can land consistently. Don't wait for your shoes to "break in." Unlike most other athletic shoes, running shoes are made from synthetic materials - not leather. They do not stretch or give. They should fit true from the first day. If a running shoe does not feel comfortable from the first run it will most likely never feel comfortable. If it's your first pair, you should probably get light- or medium-weight boots. Before deciding, consider how much you'll wear them, and under what conditions. Light-weight hiking boots (weighing up to 2-3/4 lbs. per pair) are made of synthetic materials, or a combination of leather and synthetic.
