Frequently Asked Questions

Do you put on casts?

StatMed - Urgent Care & Family Practice
No. If you have a fracture, we fit you with a splint and then help you find an orthopedist who can apply the cast. We can’t put on splints because our malpractice insurance doesn’t cover us for that. See similar questions...

What's the rule on players wearing casts?

Woodstock Crossfire Soccer Club Frequently Asked Questions (...
The League believes that a decision concerning players being allowed to wear casts in games is best left to the referee. Absolute rules to allow or to ban casts seldom account for all possible situations and only serve to highlight the competing interests of player safety and player participation. The referee can evaluate the size of the cast, the age and size of the players and the padding that has been applied to the cast. See similar questions...

My child just came off his casts, and he walks “funny”. Is there anything wrong?

Children's Orthopaedics
When the casts come off, the children will initially have a "funny" gait (there may be external rotation and a flat foot appearance). It will take 6-12 weeks for the gait to improve. The parents and doctor will decide together when the child may return to sports/activities. See similar questions...

How are casts taken off?

Frequently Asked Questions About Casts
The doctor will use a small electrical saw to remove the cast. Although it may look and sound scary to your child, the process is actually quick and painless. The saw's blade isn't sharp - it has a dull, round blade that vibrates up and down. The vibration is strong enough to break apart the fiberglass or plaster, but shouldn't hurt your child's skin and may even tickle. See similar questions...

How are casts removed?

Untitled1
Casts are usually soaked off at the beginning of the appointment in a tub of warm water and vinegar, then cut away with a small blade or scissors when they are soft. Some physicians prefer to use a cast saw. See similar questions...

DO YOU HAVE WATERPROOF CASTS?

Pediatric Orthopaedic Associates of Atlanta
Yes, we have waterproof casts. The difference between a waterproof and non-waterproof cast is the Gore-Tex lining. All fiberglass is waterproof, but the lining is typically made out of soft cotton-like material. This is not waterproof. The Gore-Tex lining allows the patient to bathe and swim as they usually would. Not all fractures are suited for Gore-Tex. Long-arm and long-leg casts usually don't do well with Gore-Tex because it is hard for the water to drain out of the cast. See similar questions...

Who casts the vision for CORE Discipleship?

CORE Discipleship - FREE Discipleship Books
The senior pastor must guide the CORE Discipleship vision. Other leaders can help, but the vision and overall leadership belong to the lead pastor. From experience we have learned that no matter who introduces the CORE Discipleship ministry into a church, that ministry will only go as far as the Senior Pastor’s vision for it - sheep follow the shepherd. I encourage church leaders to actually lead a CORE group, or at least be in a CORE Group. See similar questions...

I thought RHPS was a movie; why are there casts?

RHPS consists of basically three parts: the filmed image, the audience participation, and the live action. The cast is one of the major reasons to see the show, and most casts go to great pains and expense to put on a good performance. As Richard O'Brien said, "Three out of three ain't bad." According to Doctor Ponseti, his casting method is 97% successful and takes 1.5-2.5 months of casting (typically 5-7 casts but can be up to 9). What are the different kinds of casts?

Frequently Asked Questions About Casts
A cast, which keeps your child's bone from moving so it can heal, is essentially a big bandage that has two layers - a soft cotton layer that rests against the skin and a hard outer layer that prevents the broken bone from moving. These days, casts are made of either: plaster of paris - a heavy white powder that forms a thick paste that hardens quickly when mixed with water. Plaster of paris casts are heavier than fiberglass casts and don't hold up as well in water. See similar questions...

Can plaster of paris casts get wet?

Frequently Asked Questions About Casts
Absolutely not! A wet cast may not hold the bone in place because the cast could start to dissolve in the water and could irritate the skin underneath it, possibly leading to infection. So your child shouldn't swim and should use a plastic bag or special sleeve, which is available online or sometimes at pharmacies, to protect the cast from water. And instead of a shower, your child may need to take a sponge bath. See similar questions...

Can synthetic (fiberglass) casts get wet?

Frequently Asked Questions About Casts
Although the fiberglass itself is waterproof, the padding inside a fiberglass cast is not. So it's still important to try to keep your child's fiberglass cast from getting wet. If this is a problem, talk to your child's doctor about getting a waterproof liner. Fiberglass casts with waterproof liners allow children to continue bathing or even go swimming during the healing process. Although the liner allows for evaporation of water and sweat, it's still fragile. See similar questions...

Do all broken bones need casts?

Frequently Asked Questions About Casts
It's not practical to cast ribs and collarbones (clavicles). Even displaced collarbones (in which pieces on either side of the break are out of line) heal well with a sling or special strap called a "figure-of-eight clavicle strap," which the child wears like a vest. See similar questions...
