Since Sacred Harp singing is a participatory activity, and not a performance, the singers arrange their seating so as to focus the sound inward, toward the center of the group, instead of projecting it outward toward an audience. The greatest volume and optimum balance are heard in the very center of the hollow square, where every singer may take his or her turn as leader.

This seating arrangement is known as "the hollow square". The conductor stands in the middle. Altos and tenors face one another. Trebles (we don't say "sopranos" in Sacred Harp) and bass singers also face each other. It is a traditional arrangement. It also makes for some wonderful accoustics during larger singings.

These are often the thoughts of someone being exposed to 'hand blown' glass pipes for the first time. For starters, the raw glass is available in both rods and tubes of varying sizes. Pieces of this tubing are rotated in the flame of a torch, and heated until the glass is pliable (think of a sugar-daddy on a hot day, or honey at about room temp). Once the glass is in this semi-liquid state, it can be manipulated with various tools, gravity, and by blowing into the hot tube.

Seat selection will be determined by the date we receive your ticket application and deposit. All season ticket holders who fully complete their application by March 4 will be placed in a lottery for seat selection. For every season ticket purchased, the season ticket holder will receive an equal number of chances in the drawing. If different season ticket holders want to sit together, they must be submitted at the same time and noted on the application form.
