Urinary incontinence is the accidental release of urine. It can happen when you cough, laugh, sneeze, or jog. Or you may have a sudden need to go to the bathroom but can't get there in time. Bladder control problems are very common, especially among older adults. They usually do not cause major health problems, but they can be embarrassing. Incontinence can be a short-term problem caused by a urinary tract infection, a medicine, or constipation.

There were no reported cases of incontinence in the original clinical study conducted by Medtronic for approval of the therapy. In some other clinical studies, incontinence has occurred in 3.1 percent of patients.

There are many different types of urinary incontinence. Urge incontinence, stress incontinence, overflow incontinence, etc.. The majority of patients have more than one type of urinary incontinence or together they have mixed type like urge and stress incontinence.

The patient loses urine as soon as they feel a strong need to go to the bathroom. In this case you may leak urine before you can get to the bathroom. Sometimes when you drink even a small amount of liquid or when you hear or touch running water you may also leak urine. In some cases during the day or night you may even wet the bed.

Patients lose urine when exercising or moving in a certain way. In some cases you may lose urine when you sneeze, cough, laugh, get up from a chair, or get out of bed. While walking or doing other exercises you may also leak urine.

In this case patients do not have the feeling of fullness or the need to urinate and they lose urine during the day or night.

Urinary incontinence never jeopardizes a woman's physical health, but it does play havoc with a woman's ability to live and enjoy her life. For those women who had tried medications and exercise for relief of incontinence but still are plauged by bothersome symptoms (socially embarrassing and hygienically unacceptable to her). For those women, surgery may restore a sense of basic good health and quality of life and free them of worry and wetness.

Mixed urinary incontinence means the patient has both stress and urge incontinence. There are several issues patient needs to understand before agreeing to surgery. Surgery can put the urethra and bladder back where they belong, but this may only cure the stress component of the incontinence. However, the symptoms of urgency may continue and causes incontinence and wetness.
