A blend of propane and butane, Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) is produced either as a by-product of oil-refining, or from natural gas (methane) fields. As an alternative fuel it is most suited to use in cars and light vans, rather than heavy vehicles. Performance-wise, LPG vehicles drive just like petrol vehicles and are subject to the same maintenance schedules. It is generally accepted that LPG gives a 10-15% carbon dioxide reduction in comparison to petrol and is on a par with diesel.

LPG stands for Liquefied Petroleum Gas and is the generic name used for mixtures of hydrocarbons (mainly propane and butane). When these mixtures are lightly compressed (approx.800 kPa or 120 psi) they change from a gaseous state to a liquid. LPG is colourless, odourless and heavier than air. A chemical is added to give it a smell like rotten cabbage, so that even a very small leak can be easily detected.

Due to it's higher octane content and the fact that it is a gas, engine combustion is smoother and quieter. Also, because it contain no additives, unlike petrol or diesel, it burns cleaner, which is better for the environment and helps prolong engine and component life.

The duty the government charges on LPG is considerably less that on petrol, in order to encourage it's use.

Crash and fire tests have proved that the strength and integrity of tanks fitted to LPGA safety guidelines (CoP11) make the LPG fuel system safer than petrol. There are now over eight million LPG vehicles around the world. The Queen has four of them.

The Queen has two Rolls-Royces, a Daimler and a Rover running on autogas, and a refuelling facility in the Royal Mews. The Duke of Edinburgh's Metrocab runs on LPG. The Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister and the President of the USA all use LPG cars.
