AOL users need to be aware that long e-mails (more than the text of a printed page) will be turned into .mim (mime) files by the gnomes at AOL. This makes the file almost completely inaccessible (for all practical and ease of use purposes) to others! AOL users should create word processor files for larger communications in .txt or rft format and use the "Attach" command in the AOL Mail software. AOL users beware! (You may have discovered this already, but it bears repeating.

Attachments are large files that are usually too big or complex for an email message. Instead, they are encoded into a format that may be transmitted across the Internet. When they arrive at their destination, the code is put back together so that the file is visible in its original format. Standard email programs like Netscape Mail and Eudora Light use MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Encoding) to encode attachments.

AOL does not handle multiple attachments per message in a very useful manner. Multiple attachments are combined using MIME encoding. This is most easily avoided by asking your correspondent to include only one attachment per message (using BASE64 encoding) and turn off any additional HTML formatting. Multiple attachments can be safely compressed together, and you can decompress them on your end (in many cases the AOL software will do this automatically).

If an email has an attachment, a paperclip icon will appear to the left of the subject line. You will not be able to view the attachment from your phone.

Folks using certain AOL email clients have trouble viewing uuencoded email attachments. They can generally, however, view attachments that are (1) MIME encoded (instead of uuencoded) and (2) attached one file per message. If you are using one of the MS Windows 95/98 email clients, like MS Outlook, you can configure your system to send MIME encoded messages as follows: Click [Start], then [Settings], then [Control Panel]. Then open [Mail and FAX].

Yes. eNetBot supports sending and receiving multiple file attachments. However, if the person receiving your email is an AOL user who doesn't have eNetBot, the standard AOL restriction of one file attachment applies. eNetBot zips up all attachments into one zip file and sends this zip file with the email.

To compose a new email from webmail application, click on the 'email' tab at the top of your screen and then on the 'write email' button on the green toolbar. You can add any number of attachments to an email as long as the total size of the message including all attachments does not exceed 8MB. The first time you attempt to upload an attachment you will also need to download the Bluetie file attachment software. Simply follow the prompts on the pop up screen to download this software.
