A motivation letter is addressed to the company, to which you are applying for a placement. You introduce yourself and mention your work experience. Also, you explain your motivation (why you would like to complete a placement in this company and this country). The motivation letter should be about one page long. It should be written in the same language as the CV and should look like a normal business letter.

I run a number of Linux servers and I noticed that one of them was hacked into. Upon browsing my sshd log I noticed that the system was targeted for some time and eventually, somebody hacked out a password. Had I been using DenyHosts, that never would've happened (if only I had the foresight to write this script before my system was compromised!). Usually "mail-merging" the letter so that the letter addresses the recipient personally boosts response. However, only testing can reveal the extent to which the extra trouble and expense pay off. If you are sending a relatively small number of letters and can take the time to mail merge, definitely do it. Yet don't hold back from an otherwise promising mailing if mail merging isn't feasible.
