Can your epoxy be applied on fiberglass?

Fiberglass linings need to be scourged with heavy grade sandpaper or grinding disks to provide more mechanical bonding strength. Some of our DIY clients have applied our product on successfully on fiberglass. By the time of writing this webpage, the oldest fiberglass epoxy-coated swimming pool was in service for 12 months without any signs of deterioration.

Working with epoxy is not difficult but like many other things in life its gets easier the more you have tried it. Normally most epoxy suppliers have some lecture of their product and how it's used. If you do not have any experience with epoxy and fiberglass we recommend that you start out with a design where you only need to use fiberglass tape. It's much easier to work with fiberglass tape compared to fabric and it's easier to get a good-looking result with the tape.

You can use fiberglass instead of the provided polyester skin, but we don't recommend it. While fiberglass requires less maintenance, it is actually more fragile than the skin that comes with the kit. The polyester skin will flex when it comes in contact with another object, whereas the fiberglass may crack and require extensive repair at home. If the polyester skin does get a hole in it, it is easy to do a field fix and continue on your way.

The main body, doors, trunk lid, hood and the inner panels are all hand-laid right here at our production facility. We use a high-temperature low-shrink resin and the best quality fiberglass mat. We don't use cloth because it will eventually print throug the gel coat and ruin the exterior paint's finish. After the main shell is laid, it is rough trimmed. Then it goes to the assembly shop where it is put in a jig where the inner panels are bonded and holes for the lights are cut.

Absolutely. POR-15 is fully compatible with fiberglass and can be used to repair cracks in gelcoat. It will adhere better than polyester resin and has greater strength. Use also with fiberglass cloth to make super-strong surfaces in rusted-out areas. But be aware that POR-15 doesn't contain styrene and thus cannot melt fiberglass cloth like polyester resin does.
