Is there a fee to adopt a rescue Border Collie? How much? What does that include?

East Tennessee Border Collie Rescue - FAQ
Our requested adoption donation is between $125 and $150. Prior to adoption, all of our rescues are spayed or neutered, up to date on vaccinations, have been tested for heartworm and are heartworm prevention, have had a check for intestinal parasites and treated if necessary, and have been treated with Frontline and microchipped. Some of our rescues require additional medical treatment (such as treatment for heartworm, hip surgery, etc.) or medical testing, which we provide.

I am interested in fostering a rescue Border Collie. What does that entail?

East Tennessee Border Collie Rescue - FAQ
If you look at our web site, at the dogs available and the successful adoptions, you will see how many dogs have been through our care and evaluation, and there are many more we have had to turn away because we just do not have the space to put them all. Fostering a Border Collie is a very important step towards successful adoption and a big commitment in time and effort.

Why won't you take an aggressive Border Collie, or one that has bitten, into your rescue program?

East Tennessee Border Collie Rescue - FAQ
We certainly sympathize with your situation, and it is one that will be hard to find a happy ending to. If you are noticing "serious aggressive behavior" towards kids and adults, we would suggest you humanely and kindly euthanize the dog. It would be a significant risk to adopt it to someone else. If you are having problems, another family would as well. In the meantime, we hope that you will take appropriate actions in assuring your family's safety.

Should I breed my collie?

Frequently Asked Questions
The notion of breeding a litter of puppies seems to often be accompanied by the storybook vision of a box full of clean, fat, fluffy pups playing contentedly with each other as their dam and owner look blissfully on. While this idyllic scene is surely possible, it represents a very small portion of the whole dog-breeding experience.

What about a Rescue?

Frequently Asked Questions
mentioned above, the Colonial Schipperke Club is very active in finding homes for "pre-owned" Schipperkes. These are Schips who for reasons normally not of their making, have lost their people. They may be lost or stolen dogs, dogs who suffer from the deaths or divorces of their owners, or dogs who are given up for a variety of reasons by their original owners. Colonial members often provide foster care or brokering services to match up these dogs with new owners.

Who is this bearded man?

I Love the Yeti: October 2006
Why, it's Gigantopithecus, a possibly real animal that has supposedly gone extinct. Or has it? There are many in the popcorn industry who believe anything they read. And they recently read that Gigantopithecus could quite possibly be still alive and living in the walls of Nevada gambling casinos. They ignored that second bit about the walls (quite wisely) and focused on the whole still alive part.

Will I be able to groom the collie myself?

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if a collie is the right breed for me?

Frequently Asked Questions
The collie is a large, intelligent herding dog. He adores being in the company of his people and should be an integral part of their lives, not just a living yard ornament. He is clean indoors and learns quickly when gentle, patient training methods are used. The rough collie coat requires a fair amount of grooming and both rough and smooth varieties require periodic exercise in the form of walking, fetching or playing.

How much should I expect to pay for a collie puppy?

Frequently Asked Questions
Prices can vary widely, depending on the circumstances and geographic location of the breeder. On average, $600 - $800 is the starting price for a well-bred and properly reared companion-quality collie puppy. Not to be overlooked, consider providing a home to a "rescue" collie - that is, a collie from a local shelter. Collie Rescue groups are established in many areas of the U.S. and they are always seeking permanent or foster homes for less fortunate collies.

Are there any negative aspects of collie ownership?

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Border Collie For You?

Border Collies
The most outstanding characteristic of Border Collies is their desire to work above all other things. They herd with their heads lowered, eyeing the sheep with an intense stare. They notice every movement of the livestock, and they react by moving, at times almost imperceptibly, to take advantage of or counter it. Movement of both dog and stock should be calm and steady.
