It is highly recommended you use UNC paths for all renders when windows platforms are involved. UNC paths are better than drive letters for many reasons: If a user isn't logged in, or logs out, drive letters 'disappear', unexpectedly causing background renders to suddenly fail. Drive letters are connections associated with the logged in user. Unix cannot be made to understand or redirect paths with drive letters in them (z:/foo/bar).
