What does BINARY and ASCII mean for the upload ?

You must use this mode for everything that contains binary data as pictures and other files that are not text only. This mode is preset at www2ftp. This mode is used for transferring text files. If the server is running on Unix you must use this mode for text files as the line endings are different. The ASCII-mode will convert the line endings to unix line endings removing the "CR" from the file.

Your file extensions will help guide you with this and most FTP client programs will auto-detect the transfer type. What does ASCII and ODBC mean?

MC Research Customer Service
ASCII is an acronym for American Standard Code for Information Interchange. It is a simple, standard set of codes used by computers to represent characters (it does not allow for formatting eg, bold, underlined or fonts) that make it possible to send data between computers or programs and be universally recognised. ASCII files (text files of ASCII codes representing data) are used to convert data from one format to another. ODBC stands for Open DataBase Connectivity. See similar questions...

Question: What does upload and download mean?

Residential Computing: University Park | Bandwidth FAQ
Answer: Upload is defined as the process of sending data generated from your computer out to another computer. We monitors the total upload and download traffic for each residence hall student with a registered Ethernet connection. The traffic traveling over the Internet is what is used to determine if a student is operating within the bandwidth restrictions. Normal Internet use such as web browsing, e-mail, etcetera generates a very small amount of download and upload activity. See similar questions...

What's the difference between ascii and binary modes?

FAQ - mhc.comp.questions
Binary mode transfers the file exactly the way it is. This is for files such as images. Ascii mode is for plain-text files such as HTML and other web documents. It changes the file format from your computer's (Windows or Mac) to the server's (at MHC, UNIX). If in doubt, use binary mode. Your HTML won't really care, but it'll make a huge difference to your animated gifs. See similar questions...

Why should I care what ASCII and ODBC mean?

Our products work on the principles that your template documents ‘talk’ with your database. Essentially, they don’t speak the same language, so we need the translators of ASCII files or ODBC drivers to help them out. Generally people use ODBC drivers to achieve this but, on the odd occasion that they are not available, our products still operate fully using ASCII files, (Contact us if you require this solution.) Q 7. How do I import generic ASCII or binary data?

Frequently Asked Questions about Slicer Dicer Scientific Sof...
A 7: Importing generic ASCII or binary data into Slicer Dicer can be confusing the first time around. The main thing to remember is that Slicer Dicer imports data only, NOT coordinate values. It requires that data be evenly gridded; for example, if you had spatial data in a 3-dimensional xyz volume, the delta-x intervals have to be the same throughout the volume, as do the delta-y and delta-z intervals (though they can be different from each other). What does 'UnicodeError: ASCII [decoding, encoding] error: ordinal not in range(128)' mean?

Programming FAQ
This error indicates that your Python installation can handle only 7-bit ASCII strings. There are a couple ways to fix or work around the problem. If your programs must handle data in arbitary character set encodings, the environment the application runs in will generally identify the encoding of the data it is handing you. You need to convert the input to Unicode data using that encoding. See similar questions...

Sometimes it is impossible to re-create the file as 7-bit ASCII but any file is easy to convert to ASCII stream and execute it through the corresponding decoding filter. The following script converts standard input to hexadecimal stream and adds the decoding code. All DSC comments will be hidden but most printers ignore them anyway. The script was tested on bash and GNU/Linux system. See similar questions...

Does MT-NewsWatcher support the yEnc encoding that is showing up on binary groups a lot now?

MT-NW Manual: Frequently Asked Questions
MT-NW 3.1 does not support yEnc, even via external decoders. The main issue here is that yEnc-encoded messages contain non-ASCII characters that MT-NW 3.1 strips out when saving the messages to disk. An ugly workaround is to use the 'Export' command, but then you have to drag the saved file onto a helper app manually. MT-NW 3.2 (on OS X) does support decoding of yEnc posts (but not posting of yEnc). See similar questions...

What is ASCII?

FAQ: Search Results - Shop Floor Automations
ASCII is the most common format for text files in computers and on the Internet. In an ASCII file, each alphabetic, numeric, or special character is represented with a 7-bit binary number (a string of seven 0s or 1s). 128 possible characters are defined. UNIX and DOS-based operating systems (except for Windows NT) use ASCII for text files. Windows NT uses a newer code, Unicode. IBM's System 390 servers use a proprietary 8-bit code called EBCDIC.
