Compact fluorescent light bulbs may generally be used in enclosed fixtures as long as the enclosed fixture is not recessed. Totally enclosed recessed fixtures (for example, a ceiling can light with a cover over the bulb) create temperatures that are too high to allow the use of a compact fluorescent bulb.

All ballasts hum to some minor degree. Ballasts for 48 inch, 72 inch and 96 inch slimline lamps are sound rated C and D and are the least quiet. Slimline ballasts should only be used in industrial/commercial applications where noise is not a problem. Energy saving ballasts, residential ballasts, and solid state (electronic) ballasts are sound rated A. You may hear them in a quiet room.

Yes, BUT ONLY if the fluorescent fixture is equipped with a special dimming ballast, which can be special ordered. DO NOT use an ordinary dimming switch made for an incandescent light bulb with fluorescent fixtures.

All fluorescent lights require a ballast to function. Both magnetic and electronic fluorescent ballasts give off a slight humming noise; harmonics is the technical term. By design an electronic ballast has reduced harmonics and therefore the hum is less noticeable than when using a magnetic ballast. If the hum is louder than usual the ballast may need to be replaced.

Where occupational exposure remains after use of engineering and work practice controls, 5193 requires that PPE be used that is "appropriate." PPE will be considered "appropriate" only if it does not permit blood or OPIM to pass through employees' underlying garments, or to reach the skin, eyes, mouth, or other mucous membranes under normal conditions of use. PPE must retain this capability during the entire course of its use by the employee.

Projector/Lamphouse The projector is the most critical part of any theater's projection setup. Many newly installed theaters in the US use new or rebuilt Simplex or Century 35mm projectors. The most common Simplex models are the Simplex XL (a.k.a. Pro 35, a currently manufactured model), the older Simplex E-7, and the really old Super Simplex. The most common Century models are the SA, the older C, and the 35/70mm JJ.

If a CFL is used outdoors, it should be used in an enclosed fixture. The only exception is the BR38 (Globe item # 07442). This bulb may be exposed to directly to rain or snow. If used indoors, some CFLs can be used in an enclosed recessed fixtures, some cannot. If a CFL cannot be used in an enclosed recessed fixture, the marking on the plastic base will specify “not for use in totally enclosed recessed fixtures.” This is a UL safety requirement.

Because of electronic interference, compact fluorescent lights can not be used on dimmers. Doing so will shorten the life of the bulbs. They also should not be used in recessed or fully enclosed fixtures.
