The idea was to pick a colour that would contrast with most other sites I link to, so that people could see when they were on my site and when they had left it. Purple is one of my favourite colours and I created a colour scheme that meant I could still put dark text and default colour links on top of white and yellow for ease of reading. The purple has been one of the constants in the site design since 1998 and the colours still form a distinctive combination.

An invasive, weedy species, loosestrife readily establishes in a variety of urban and rural wetland habitats. Once it's present, it has a tendency to dominate, outcompeting native vegetation. The result is solid (monotypic) stands of purple loosestrife.

One of the most easily recognizable features of purple loosestrife, at any time of the year, is its ridged, square stem. A single plant can produce as many as 30 stems growing from a central, woody root mass. The leaves are smooth, opposite, and attached directly to the stem. Each plant can grow as tall as two meters. Loosestrife flowers in late June to late September. The flowers are pink-purple in color and are tightly clustered on a long spike.

The best way to remove purple loosestrife from your yard is by hand digging. Make sure that all pieces of root tissue are removed and dry out the plant material thoroughly before disposal. I actually think purple in nature is quite nice -- eggplants, violets, plums, etc. But purple in manmade design applications has always struck me as really tacky. Like, seriously, have you ever seen a purple car? A total nightmare. Same goes for purple clothing, especially uniforms.

When Deep Purple went on their first tour, to Denmark in 1968, they were still named Roundabout. This was the name suggested by Chris Curtis, former drummer for The Searchers, who actually started the whole process of putting the band together. His concept was of a "roundabout" where people get on and off easily, allowing different line-ups. He was rather quickly put aside, and the actual band (Mk I) wasn't too pleased with the name.
