Maybe, and maybe not. Once the animal's available date arrives, the animal may be adopted to the first person who arrives wanting the animal, or the animal may be euthanized. This is why it is so important to get to the shelter as soon as possible when the available date arrives.

Unfortunately, the answer is usually NO. We would love to be able to do this, but, in general, we do not have enough volunteers to help in this way. We are all volunteers and spend our time photographing and listing the animals for www.amrt.net (and in our other rescue activities). Many of us do not even live near the shelters we cover, and only go once a week to compile lists and photos for www.amrt.net .

Payment (most shelters do NOT accept credit cards), and often a photo identification (driver's license, etc.). Also, make sure you bring something to keep the animal secure -- a collar and leash for a dog, or a carrier for a cat. And don't forget to get an identification tag with your phone numbers onto your new family member's collar right away!

If the animal you choose is available that day and has been spayed or neutered you may take your new loved one home with you at a cost of $23 for cats and $49 for dogs. If the animal is available and has not been spayed or neutered then the cost is $58 for cats and $84 for dogs. The animal will be ready to go home the next afternoon. Most importantly, the people of the community must understand that being a responsible pet owner is a tremendous help. By tagging your pet with identification tags and by spaying or neutering your animal, you are helping to lessen the number of stray animals.

Sometimes poultry is, but generally livestock is taken to a livestock holding facility run by a Sheriff's Department employee. The facility is a farm with an environment suitable for the care and housing of livestock.
