The -> is the "infix dereference operator". In other words it is the means by which one calls a sub with a pass by reference (among other things you can do with ->). As stated above most things in calls to Perl/Tk routines are passed by reference. The -> is used in perl just as in C or C++. (Most of the widget primitives are elements of the Tk:: "perl class".) A simple example of dereferencing would be: $x = { def => bar }; # $x is a reference to an anon.

The station circle represents the cloud cover; open circle means clear; and a completely covered circle means 100% cloud cover (or fog). The line extending outward from the station circle is called a wind barb and represents the wind flow; where the wind is blowing from the direction of the barb (north is towards the top of the map and east is towards the viewer's right). The line(s) extending from the end of the barb are called feathers and represent the windspeed.

Each symbol is composed of the first two letters of the genus+first two letters of the species+first letter of the terminal infraspecific name+tiebreaking number (if needed). Genus and family symbols are the first five (genus) or six (family) letters of the name, plus tiebreaking number (if needed). Symbols were first used in the Soil Conservation Service’s National List of Scientific Plant Names (NLSPN), and have been perpetuated in the PLANTS system.

The NOAA logo is the logo of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a part of the U.S. Department of Commerce. This logo appears on all maps. The OCS logo is the logo of the Oregon Climate Service (OCS), a major contributor to this Atlas. All grids that went into the maps displaying the OCS logo were produced using the PRISM system. Make sure the symbol line color is different from the symbol fill color. Open the symbol map properties, click the button in the symbol group, and then check the line and fill colors in the symbol properties dialog box.

The @ symbols are merely an indication of what we think of the sites that we link to. The more @ symbols, the better we think it is. We must stress that it in no way relates to other classifications - e.g. the English Tourism Council's stars, diamonds, keys, etc. or to AA/RAC ratings and the like.

means, "trademark" and indicates that the owner is using the word or design as a trademark. It is commonly used prior to registration with the USPTO. (Similarly, "SM" denotes a service mark.) The R in a circle symbol (®) indicates that the trademark is registered with the USPTO.
