How do I LLF (Low-Level Format) a hard drive?

XactCopy Technical FAQ - DuoCor Technical Support
Disclaimer: A LLF will destroy all information on a hard drive and effectively render it in the same condition that it arrived from the manufacturer... blank with nothing on it. If you are not familiar with DOS and drive channels seek professional assistance from your local computer technician. Use these procedures and software at your own risk. Boot the computer into DOS mode or use a 98 boot disk. Use your favorite Low-Level Format utility to erase the first few sectors of the hard drive.

Can SpinRite low-level format my IDE, EIDE, or SCSI drive?

GRC | SpinRite 6.0 FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
No software of any sort can truly low-level format today's modern drives. The ability to low-level format hard drives was lost back in the early 1990's when disc surfaces began incorporating factory written "embedded servo data". If you have a very old drive that can truly be low-level reformatted, SpinRite v5.0 will do that for you (which all v6.0 owners are welcome to download and run anytime). See similar questions...

Formatting a hard drive can help eliminate file corruption, correct slow running systems and get rid of error messages that keep popping up. See similar questions...

BitWise IM - FAQ
Windows: By default, the preferences are stored in HKCU/Software/BitWise Chat/BitWise. Optionally, you may store the preferences in BitWise.ini in your home folder by pressing "Setup" prior to logging in and specifying you wish to store your preferences in that file rather than the registry. Detached mode allows you to use basic client features even when your computer cannot maintain communication with the BitWise server. See similar questions...

Will cookies fill up my hard drive?

The Unofficial Cookie FAQ
Both Netscape and Microsoft have measures in place that limit the number of cookies that will be saved on your hard drive at one time. Both Internet Explorer and Netscape conform to the RFC 2109 limitations on your total cookie count to 300 (this includes a limit of 20 cookies per individual domain). If you exceed this, the browser will discard your least-used cookies to make room for the new ones. See similar questions...

How do cookies end up on my hard drive?

The Unofficial Cookie FAQ
After a cookie is transmitted through an HTTP header, it is stored in the memory of your browser. This way the information is quickly and readily available without re-transmission. As we have seen, however, it is possible for the lifetime of a cookie to greatly exceed the amount of time the browser will be open. In such cases, the browser must have a way of saving the cookie when you are not browsing, or when your computer is shut off. See similar questions...

How do you format new recording media (hard drive and/or Compact Flash)?

Sound Devices: 7-Series FAQ
When an unformatted hard drive or CF is inserted into the recorder the user is prompted to format media if it is not already a FAT32 volume. If a new Compact Flash or hard drive has audio or other data files present but the medium is not a FAT32 volume, the 7-Series will see the volume as unformatted and prompt for formatting. This will erase any data files on the drive. A volume already formatted as FAT32 installed into the machine will be ready to record immediately. See similar questions...

My hard drive crashed. Where can I download Telnet Magic?

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Page
If you still have your license code, you can download Telnet Magic from the web site. The license code is release dependent for the first two digits of the version level. For example, a license code for release 2.2.0 will work for releases 2.2.0-2.2.9 but it will not work with release 2.3.0, so you need to download the correct release. If you were running the current release, download and install the evaluation version from our Telnet Magic Evaluation Download page and enter your license code. See similar questions...

The Broadband Reports Windows XP FAQ - dslreports.com
It is best to have your OS on a separate partition than the rest of your data. This results in less fragmentation and ensures speedy operation of your system. If your hard drive is large enough, then partitioning is probably a good idea for you. Common practice is to have at least three partitions: one ~8GB for the OS, one ~10GB for Documents and other personal files, and whatever is left for programs. See similar questions...

I created an image of the hard drive. It stops at about 4Gb. Why?

R-TT - FAQ
You have likely created the image on the FAT32 file system which has a 4Gb file size limitation. Therefore larger files can not be created there. If this is the case, we would suggest that you either use NTFS (through network or attaching the drive to a Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 box if you are running Windows 9x/ME) or split your drive into regions each less than 4Gb, create their images and make virtual volume set afterwards if you need to recover files from there.
