Blue herons and raccoons love fish so ponds must be designed with this in mind. A pond should be at least 8 ft. wide and 2 ft. deep to discourage raccoons. These dimenions make it difficult for raccoons as they will not dive into a pond for fish. Blue herons are the most difficult challenge. Having a red color to your pond is a common problem in central and western Oklahoma. It is caused by small particles of clay that remain suspended in the water. Because these particles have a magnetic-like "charge" to them, they bounce around and can stay suspended for literally hundreds of years before they settle. Assuming that you are asking about the common red eared slider turtle that you generally see in pet stores, they are quite hard to find because they are now illegal to import in to Canada. They are not illegal to own, or sell, but just to import, so any turtles that you find on the market now, are either older, and were brought in before the law came in to effect, or they are younger, and captive bred.
