Your recycled items can be made into a huge variety of new products (see the Recycle Now Website for a selection of products made from recycled materials). Plastic bottles can be made into fleece jackets, glass can be recycled again and again into new bottles and jars without losing it's quality, aluminium cans can also be recycled many times and made into new cans (or cars!). Paper and card are pulped and recycled into new products such as toilet roll, cereal boxes, newspapers etc.

Yes. The recycling center is open to the public but is primarily for apartment and condo dwellers. Recycling is located in the service yard at 15600 Chagrin between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM on Saturdays and Sundays. (A separate backyard recycling program is available for single and two family buildings.)

Recycling in our building is very straightforward. Card board and paper-related items go in the grey bin. Glass, plastic, and wire hangers should be placed in the blue bin.

The Council does not have a recycling program. The Solid Waste Division of Public Works coordinates the county's recycling initiatives. The recycling office is located at 4391 Ridgewood Center Drive, Prince William, Virginia and can be reached at 703-792-4670.

Contamination in the recycling industry means any material placed in a recycling container that is not specifically accepted as recyclable in that program. Contaminants can be anything from cans in the paper recycling to half empty bottles in the bottle recycling to food waste.

Recycling is part of concrete’s life cycle from the beginning. Concrete mixes often incorporate several common industrial byproducts like fly ash and slag that would otherwise add to landfills. Use of these byproducts also reduces reliance on raw materials. Finally, when a concrete structure has served its purpose, it can be crushed for use as aggregate in new concrete or as base materials for roads, sidewalks and concrete slabs.

All materials collected in the FoodPlus! Recycling program are composted at Green Earth Technologies (GET) in Lynden. They are located at 774 Meadowlark Rd., phone (360) 354-4936. Composting is a natural process that breaks down organic materials and turns them into a rich and beneficial soil amendment. Compost from GET is available for sale in Whatcom County. When you compost you are keeping recyclable waste local and supporting local jobs and businesses.

Virginia has undertaken a project entitled Virginia Naturally, as a way to present opportunities for Virginia's to help Virginia's Environment. Virginia has established spring and fall campaigns to recognize and encourage voluntary conservation efforts, called Operation Spruce-Up and the Fall River Renaissance. Recycling is part of the Green Cup competition! The house that has improved the most on recycling, energy use, and has the most “eco-projects” receives a cash prize. In 2006, the winning house received $1,037.

Schedules for trash pickup and curbside recycling pickup depend on where you live. See the trash pick-up schedule for more detailed information. Your recycling will be picked up at the curb on the same day that your trash is picked up. All recycling bins are to be placed on the curb, not in the alleys. A free bin may be obtained at the department of Public Works, located at 1100 E. 4th Street, or at City Hall downtown.
