Can I change between MEng and BEng degrees?

Yes. All students are initially registered for the MEng degree, but you can elect to change to the three-year BEng at the end of year 2, and there are no restrictions for this choice. Students whose academic performance at the end of year 2 is assessed as being below the appropriate standard will be transferred to a BEng programme.

MEng degree requires you to complete a total of 480 points of study. Of those, 360 points are at undergraduate level and you can graduate with a BEng(Hons) when you have completed them. The remaining 120 points are at postgraduate level and include a compulsory group project (T885 Team engineering 30 points). For the purpose of classifying your degree, 240 credit points from your best grades on specified Open University courses (in Technology, Mathematics & Computing or Science), at Level 2 or higher, are used. VI-A students admitted to the M.Eng. program usually have consecutive summer and fall VI-A assignments after their senior year. To complete their M.Eng. thesis, other schedules can be accommodated with the agreement of their VI-A company. The purpose behind making the last two work assignments consecutive is to provide the student sufficient time to do an in-depth piece of engineering work at the company which will be acceptable to the Department's faculty as the basis for the M.Eng. thesis. You may be able to count previous study at higher education level (including HNC/D) for up to 210 points towards the 360 points needed for a BEng(Hons) degree. You must complete T191, T397, 120 points of OU study at level 3 including the project, and meet the residential school requirement. In order for previous study to be eligible for consideration for credit towards the BEng(Hons) degree, it would have to be included on the University's approved list for awarding credit. You can count courses towards any number of degrees but you have to complete a proportion of 'new study' for each additional degree. For the BEng(Hons), that amounts to 120 points from courses that you have not already counted towards a previous degree.
